The House voted to impeach President Trump for his conduct toward Ukraine and his refusal to cooperate with the inquiry after nearly 12 hours of debate Wednesday night, making him only the third president in U.S. history to receive that sanction.

Democrats had more than enough votes to approve the two articles of impeachment against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, even with two Democratic defections on the first, three on the second and presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) voting “present” on both.

Wednesday’s action will lead to a trial in the Republican-led Senate, where a two-thirds vote would be required to remove the president from office.

At the heart of the Democrats’ case is the allegation that Trump tried to leverage a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation of former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kyiv conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Doesn't mean a thing - it would be an absolute miracle if the Senate convicted, and they won't.

Senate wont convict. They need 2/3 of the 100 votes to convict and the republicans have 53 votes to begin with. Only way it happens is if they completely abandon him which they wont

What it will do is make Trump extremely nervous. Naturally that's assuming he wants to stay in the job. With that assumption in mind and the senate vote needing to be 67 to remove him he'd realise that it will only take 20 odd of his supporters to flip. That would be motivation enough for him to be extra nice and super accommodating to his gang. I mean, he'd have to start listening, being thoughtful, giving time to the lesser lights. It'd only take one group of like minded folk with say, a common interest being mistreated by Trump and bang, there's your impeachment.

To what end? Just some election news shock value?
essentially it gives them a lot of leverage.

the idea from the republican side was to get a speedy trial, get acquitted (senators openly admitted they were going to vote to acquit before anything had been presented), move on and focus on the 2020 election. both trump and the gop would be able to gloat that the democrats wasted time, money, resources only to have trump exonerated.

by withholding the articles until they decide otherwise, the democrats have prevented trump and the gop from controlling the narrative so to speak. there's over 200 bills for instance, that have been passed by the house that are sitting on mitch mcconnell's desk waiting for action - the gop's response to the democrats impeachment hearings is being completely obstructionist and grinding the system to a halt - there's every chance they can say pass these bills and we'll send the articles through. or the next time the debt ceiling is reached and a new spending bill needs to be passed they can dangle the carrot. or they can ask for trumps tax records. or they could simply let the noise swirl for the next 6 months, which would mean republicans up for reelection in swing states would be very uncomfortable and put them in a difficult spot - save themselves or save trump?

I think it is a risky strategy for the Democrats really, very much a dual edged sword. Trump and the GOP have been running the line for ages that this was all just a partisan political exercise by the Democrats, and this proposal just plays into the Republican's hands in my view. It will be relied upon as evidence that rather the Democrats having a truly founded belief that Trump has committed acts worthy of impeachment and justifying his removal from office, that this is a cynically motivated political exercise to damage Trump for the next election. Ironically, what he is accused to trying to do Biden.
