Travis Meyn, in tomorrow's Courier Mail, reports David Fifita consistently lagged the pack in most fitness drills during the first session since the holiday break.

Quote from the people's captain, Jake Turpin:

“I think we’ll all be feeling it – not just Dave. H
e did well, I think he improved his (beep test) score from last year. As long as everyone is doing their best, that’s all the coaches can ask for. We got given a program in the two weeks we had off and that’s what training is all about, that’s the mentality we have at this club and we knew what we were in for. They (fitness staff) were happy with us. I’m not really singling anyone out. As a group we all came back pretty good. The boys put a bit of work in the two weeks we had off.”

something interesting from that article, is that Turps said they were given a program to follow during their off season break ... could be the reason most of them have come back in pretty good shape compared to previous years.

I'm not sure if this is something that's been done previously

Yeah, i am hoping that this is an indication that seibold has an idea how he wants us to play and wants to tailor the players fitness/body shape to support this (i.e. milf looking slimmer may indicate seibold wants utilise his speed and agility).

I hope seibold uses this off season to really work on game plans and structures as we appeared rudderless last year and often got by on individual efforts.

I think if Fifita starts the season slowly, it becomes even more imperative to transition Oates to the 2nd row. We can't really afford a "part-time" 2nd rower. Not with such a gigantic pack. Granted Haas has a good motor, but we shouldn't be expecting him to make up for it.
Anyway hopefully its all just a beat-up regarding Fifita's fitness, but it wouldn't change my view.

I liked this article on off season progress :

They have always had programs and weight targets to return with for pre season training. Maybe as a club we werent strict enough enforcing it, but at the same time, we are coming off the back of, imo, our biggest disaster of a year for this club. We were humiliated in a way we never really have been in that shit show against the Eels. Something had to change.

You think so? Why? Dearden isn't a 5/8 and the link to the article I posted suggested Milford is returning to the Milford of old, the one we all want to see. Sounds to me like any pressure is on Croft, not Milf which is a good thing

Pressures on Milford this year. He is off contract at the end of the year and they could easily put Croft at 5/8 and run Dearden at halfback if he isn't re-signed. He is playing for his future this year at the club as he hasn't lived up to his mill contract.

After last year, pressure's on the entire team this year, individually and collectively, and on Seibold as well.

Until 2018 Milford was our best player. Any shortfalls in his performance were mostly the result of the club failing to provide the team with a proper half back for 2019. I don't think saying Milf failed to live up to his contract in 2019 is entirely accurate

Hasn’t it been reported though that he also has a player option for 2021?

here’s hoping he forgets all that and just kills it this year

Milford must be feeling pressure from Dearden.

For some reason I've been thinking that Dearden will be the number 7 understudy to Croft and O'Sullivan (when fit) would be the understudy to Milf at number 6. Dearden is more of an organiser and traditional 7, whereas O'Sullivan looked good on the left running the ball when given the opportunity last season before he was injured.
