NEWS 'Frustrating': Hunt's move around Broncos' chess board

Veteran Ben Hunt has been frustrated by chopping and changing positions at Brisbane but it has not dampened his spirits or the desire to play on in 2027.

The 36-year-old has played most of his 359 NRL games as a starting half but already this season has appeared at five-eighth, off the bench, halfback and then back to the bench.

Last year he was brilliant at hooker, No.6 and No.7 before shining at five-eighth in the Broncos' grand final win.

"It is frustrating in some aspects but I have done it before through my career at different stages," Hunt said ahead of Saturday's away clash with Gold Coast where he is on the bench again.

"As frustrating as it is doing that, it is something I am used to. I just have to get on with it."

With Parramatta's Jonah Pezet on his way to the club next year to play halfback and hooker Cory Paix just re-signed for another two years, Hunt is unsure if he'll be able to hold down one position through what is left of his career.

"I hope it happens but the way it is going I don't know," he said.

"We will have to wait and see. I am not the coach and I am not in the performance staff. I am not pulling the strings. I am here to do my job and wherever I am asked to go that week I will go and do the best I can."

The challenging situation has not diminished off-contract Hunt's desire to play on in 2027.

"Not at all. I am still pretty keen to play next year at the moment," he said

The Australian cricket team in the mid-1980s lost Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh to retirement in one hit and struggled for five seasons.

Hunt is aware captain Adam Reynolds will retire and star prop Payne Haas will leave for South Sydney at the end of the year, so his nous and professionalism will be vital.

"I guess there is a little bit of that, obviously losing two great leaders of this club and not just great players," he said.

"They know what it means to be a professional rugby league player, so losing guys like that will definitely take a toll."

Very disappointing that when we were finally starting to fade out of the headlines , Bhunt comes out saying how frustrated he is with being chopped and changed between starting and being on the bench..
Now the germos have another angle to tee off on Madge and the Broncos about ffs..😏

Yeah I thought they were pretty shit comments from someone that is a 350 gamer and was always coming to the team as the back up halfback to Reynolds.

I'm assuming this is just Benny being too honest with the media and based on how many quotes came out of his time at dargons that's probably just who he is when talking to them.

He's just won a comp and broncos and Madge gave him that opportunity... I would've thought that his honest feelings would be that he's just happy playing and happy to be in a strong team every week.

We do see that Bhunt is super competitive on the field though, so it's probably along the lines that in his current role he can't contribute to wins as much as he would like and that probably is frustrating to him.

He's our best halfback. It's just a matter of time before he's wearing the 7 again.

I actually think we play better with controversy lol and I think madge doesnt want accolades, and is happy for himself and the boys to get bagged.

Madge obviously uses it to motivate the team, and it 100% works. Chase the controversy boys! Send carrigan out there and say get him to say walters is a better coach, send reynolds out there and get him to say he thinks hes a bigger broncos legend than CONEHEAD, get walsh to say hes always loved the idea of going to rugby union! Chase the drama!

Any other team wouldn't praise walters or teo for their contributions to a premiership more than the current head coach lol. He obviously tells them, do not praise me! And give the others their chocolates.

I dont see the issue. I'd rather have a good player who is unhappy he isnt in the team. We need players who are competitive and team players.

I think he thought he'd be starting over Paix at the very least, which he definitely should be. He's our best halfback at the moment as well, so his role should have been pretty locked in.

I think the 6 man bench is throwing off his minutes.

Seems Madge is reluctant to commit to his 4 bench options in case of injury and has been holding off Bhunt as much as possible.

X and Talty always get on the field before halftime, but Bhunt's minutes are way down on what I would expect.
