CRICKET General Cricket Discussion - 2023/24

Yeah I’m not sure we’re on the right track with that .. where Australia has fallen behind the very best ODI teams over the last few years is in their ability to post / chase really big scores consistently.. Not sure a batting line up of predominately all rounders is going to push us over the edge in that regard..

Does Aus have the quality top 3/4 the likes of India / Eng / even NZ have though? I don't think so. Australia has no Sharma / Kohli / Azam / Van Der Dussen who pull out 100s regularly and average 50/60 in ODI.

Australia has massively fallen behind the 8 ball of ODI cricket. It’s to late to blow the shit up now before the World Cup but we have 0 chance of winning it especially in the sub continent. The tactics behind the batting is mind boggling. The side is just structured so wrong and if we dont get off to a good start in our opening 2-3 partnerships we are fucked. Funny how in an era of trajectory towards shorter format and a predominantly test focused nation has found success in t20 more than ODI in the last half a decade.

Important transition period and McDonald has done nothing but been underwhelming to kick start his coaching career. We are fucken TOAST in years to come if he is at the helm.

ODI is on its last legs, doesn't really matter to be honest.

It’s lost it’s legs in this country cause they don’t value it. T20 leagues will be crickets LIV Golf moment, or Super League (both NRL and Football last year). Governing bodies and nations will get to a point where in 2 or 3 years businessman will be profiting off it rather than them and they will do what union has to do and say you can’t chase the money and play for Australia too (to an extent you can play IPL and whatever but you must play domestic competitions etc…).

CA’s tactics around growing ODI cricket is dreadful they have series in one city these days to save money. Like **** that. Every year in the summer there should be a 5 game ODI series post the tests. Like it used to be. And no fucken double up on the stadiums for **** sakes in the series. CA’s lacklustre effort of turning it into a good product has given you and all of us that mindset. It’s not dead at all in a vast number of other nations, CA just need to pull there heads in.

It isn’t dead but it’s dying and this isn’t because of CA, at least not only. This is just the reality of world cricket now. There are already too many T20 leagues as it is and more to come. T20 is being pushed for the Olympics and the amount of countries currently playing it is huge.

The current Asia Cup I’m pretty sure used to be 50 overs and is now 20 but I could be wrong on this. The gun ODI players tend to often also be gun 20 overs players, there’s a lot of crossover. Recently Ben Stokes retired from ODI to prolong his test and T20 career and more are expected to follow suit.

Trent Boult has refused a central NZ contract because it would restrict his access to T20 leagues around the world and this has been a long problem for the West Indies already anyway. Their best players are only available to represent WI in T20.

David Warner had to be offered a massive bonus to play in the Big Bash instead of another league. Chris Lynn is going to another league while the BBL is on. This is going to be an ongoing trend. Look at the futures schedule, ODI around the world is increasingly getting pushed out and even more so now this stupid hundred competition has come in as well. Little of this is within CA’s power and there is little CA can do to stop it.

Sorry Fitzy .
Not enough expletives bro .
Could you add a few more ***** to help express it more strongly pls ?

TIA .

Even with 5 allrounders, the worst batsman in the top 8 unfortunately opens and has the (c) next to his name.
Not sure how Finch is still in the team, who would have thought that a white ball specialist captain was a thing!

Asia Cup is T20 format this year because of the looming World Cup. Otherwise, it would be an ODI tourney.

Totally on board with your post though. T20 has saturated the cricketing schedule hence making ODI's less relevant. It's having It's effect on Test Cricket as well with only Eng and Aust giving a damn about the long version these days. There will come a time in the not too distant future where T20 will be the only format played. The BBL will be like a feeder comp where all players strive to feature in the lucrative IPL.

I agree with all of this except test cricket. In recent years, it has been gaining again in popularity, especially because India is really, really good at it. NZ has been having sell out crowds as well. I think test cricket for now, at least for 5 or 6 countries is fine.

Tim David!

No idea how he fits into the side that won the world cup though.

He took Jhye Richardson's spot in the squad didnt he? Seems like smudge might be the odd man out although if he makes the 11 i hope they ditch one of the allrounders eg marsh or agar

He replaced Swepson in the T20 squad, only change to the squad from last years world cup. Could be Smith but i can't see them dropping him, same with Finch.

I reckon these days, in T20 you need this balance:

1. Batsman-Keeper
2. Batsman
3. Batsman
4. Batsman
5. All Rounder
6. Batsman
7. All Rounder
8. All Rounder
9. Bowler
10. Bowler
11. Bowler

Anyone seen the Steve Smith dismissal from today? The dismissal was embarrassing enough, but the review was even more embarrassing!
Can’t remember the last time Smith got given out LBW and didn’t review.

Nothing will ever beat when he was dominating in the ashes, he left it and then started walking off before being given, then reviewed it. I think we were 9 down so he had to, but it was a great watch.

I agree, 6 options is the most you need, and the 6th option doesn't need to be more than a decent part timer. I hate seeing blokes have a few wickets and under 6rpo, and they only bowl 2-3 overs because the team has 8 options.
