Article saying Hoffman would be happy to play at 6 if need be (assuming we don't get Milford)

BRISBANE fullback Josh Hoffman is a surprise candidate for the Broncos’ five-eighth role after rejecting a straight-swap proposal to replace Ben Barba at Canterbury next season.

The Broncos’ man-of-the-moment, Hoffman ignited Brisbane’s finals charge last Friday night with a demolition of the Eels that vindicated his return to the backfield a month ago.
A pay rise now beckons for Hoffman, who has an agreement with the Broncos that he is eligible for an upgrade if the NRL’s salary-cap rises above $5.5 million, which will occur next season.
But with Barba tipped to join the Broncos on a four-year deal from next season, Hoffman’s permanency in his preferred fullback position is under a cloud.
The Courier-Mail understands Hoffman wearing the No. 6 jumper is one option to accommodate Barba at fullback in 2014.
The 25-year-old played much of his junior football at five-eighth and Broncos coach Anthony Griffin flagged the possibility when he met with Hoffman last month to discuss his shift from wing to fullback.
It can also be revealed a Bulldogs official contacted Hoffman’s management eight weeks ago as Canterbury explored contingency plans in the event they granted Barba a release.

But Hoffman spurned the Bulldogs’ inquiry and is committed to honouring his Broncos deal, which expires at the end of 2015, even if Barba arrives at Red Hill.
“Josh wants to stay, he’s a good club man and we won’t be asking for a release if Barba comes to the club,” Hoffman’s manager Paul Hogan said.
“In an ideal world, Josh would play fullback but he has his heart set on playing 100 games for the Broncos.
“He is pretty settled at the moment in Brisbane, he and his partner have just had a baby.
“When he comes back from the World Cup (in November), we will know exactly what’s happening with the Barba stuff and the Anthony Milford situation.
“But Josh is due to get a pay rise and the Broncos have treated him well in that regard ... it would be an upgrade well deserved with the way he’s playing.”
Since his return to fullback against the Cowboys a month ago, Hoffman has been in devastating touch, amassing 611 running metres at an average of 152 per game.

For Hoffman, it is a form burst partly inspired by the birth of daughter Leilani Grace last month. The name is a tribute to Hoffman’s mother Grace, who died tragically of a brain aneurism just weeks before Christmas in 2009.
“I always dreamed of starting a family and having a baby girl has given me perspective about life,” Hoffman said.
“I wish Mum was here to see her granddaughter.
“For me, there is more to life than football now. I’m really enjoying fatherhood and that is helping my football.”
Hogan said Hoffman had the power, size and skill-set to succeed at five-eighth.
“Josh has a lot more strings to his bow than many people realise,” he said.
“`Hook’ (Griffin) has mentioned the possibility of Josh playing six at some stage and he would certainly give consideration to that.
“Josh was a six in the juniors in Mackay and he played inside-centre in rugby union so he would have no issues going to five-eighth if that’s want the Broncos want.”

Could only work if the club got Locky to do passing and kicking drills with him EVERY DAY of the off-season if it's known to be a sure switch. And watching tape after tape after tape of game footage to grow his 'footy brain' into being a half. Honestly I don't see it happening

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

Yeah, I joked about that a few times, because he mentioned that he thinks of himself as a 5/8th before.

I can't really see it working, a 5/8th is supposed to pass the ball. He passed a couple of times on Fri, but he looked really awkward doing it.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

Go directly to wing/centre, do not play fullback/five-eighth, do not collect $200.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

Lol, Hoffman at 5/8... Please... Stick to centre or wing if Barba comes.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

I've seen Hoffman pass but I've never seen him draw and pass, if he can't do that then he hasn't got a hope in hell of being a 5/8th.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

I noticed he got himself into dummy-half more to try and make up for the lack of Hodges, but yeah I've heard the same things about him considering himself a possible 5/8th. Unless science obtains the alien powers from Space Jam and we steal Locky's abilities, it'll be more than laughable putting a running 5/8th who hasn't shown he can kick or pass on point, or run over the top of people (kinda like what Sutton used to do) into the halves. Although when you have teams like the Titans putting Ash Harrison at 6 (out of necessity though I guess) you can always give him a crack if it stops him leaving the club. He might surprise everyone

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

You're barely a fullback mate. Wing or nothing.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

I really liked how Hoffman turned down the Bulldogs offer to play fullback for them if Barba comes ... says to me that he can't be too unhappy with Barba signing with the Broncos ... Apparently he is also due for an upgrade to his current deal (which expires at the end of 2015) since the salary cap rises to above 5.5 million next season (he has a clause in his contract to that effect). not sure how much of an increase he gets though.

He spent a lot of his junior days playing 5/8th. How do we know he isn't a natural 5/8th already? He's never played there in Broncos colours because we had Hook favoring Norman/Prince and Hoffman was happy at FB.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

It appears Hoffman may in fact move to five-eighth to accommodate Barba.

"Josh wants to stay, he’s a good clubman and we won’t be asking for a release if Barba comes to the club," Hoffman’s manager Paul Hogan said.

“In an ideal world, Josh would play fullback but he has his heart set on playing 100 games for the Broncos.’’

Why on earth would we even consider Hoffman at Five-Eighth at this stage, his passing and kicking game (Has he ever kicked before?) are both unheard of

I said when Lockyer retired I thought we should move Hoffman to 5/8.

Initially, it sounds crazy.

But, if you have Barba at Fullback, he's basically your 5/8, but playing defensively at Fullback. Hoffman is your #6 and playing defensively in the front line (Hoffman is much bigger than Barba and is a very good defender). Hoffman plays a running 5/8 game, hitting holes on the edges and kicking occasionally (yes, he can kick and he's even a lefty). This will also tighten up our right side defence immeasurably.

It's not THAT silly. I'd like to see us try it, actually.

People must really rate Hunt if they think he could survive with Milford or Hoffman as his 5/8th.

Cue the Prince is terrible and anyone is an upgrade comments.

Can you explain what is wrong with Hoffman as 5/8 with Hunt?

My argument is that Hunt is a genuine Halfback. He plays what he sees, has a good short kicking game and a good passing game. Hoffman has a good running game, good support play game and can hit a hole.

Perhaps organisation is the issue you're referring to? That could be a problem, but it's something I think Hunt will get better at over time.

I'm actually completely with you on this. I think with barba at the back and hunt (assuming friday night was a blip and he keeps developing) at 7 hoffman could be very succesful at 6. His running game is top notch so we don't necessarily need a brilliant passing/kicking 6 with barba and hunt.

My ultimate backline is:

1. Barba
2. Kahu
3. Reed
4. Hoffman
5. Copley/JYY (even though I doubt if he comes back it will be on the wind, but I just cant bring myself to move past that yet)
6. Milford
7. Hunt

But if we dont get milford I would be happy to give hoffman a shot at 6. In fact, I'm sure this would be an unpopular opinion, but even if we got milford I would be very tempted to play him off the bench at first, as he could fill in anywhere in the backline, would mean he can keep developing at his own pace, and would reek havoc amongst the tired forwards at the end of each half.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

If we got Milford and played him off the bench I'd lose my shit, it just won't happen, and I can't see Hoffman getting a chance at Five-Eighth, if we don't get Milford, then Prince will be the starting 6 next season.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

Milford will probably wearing the 14 seems more likely as time goes on, especially if we do somehow snag Barba as well.

Why would Griffin take a different tac with Milford than he did with Ben Hunt? That's how the Raiders have used Milford, and how the Bulldogs blooded Ben Barba as well.

Dropping a 19 year old into the 6 jersey at a top tier club with the weight of history in that jersey - IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.

Looking more like:

1. Barba
2. Copely [Hoffman]
3. Reed
4. Hoffman [Hodges]
5. Kahu
6. Prince
7. Hunt

14. Milford [Assuming he and Barba actually put pen to paper]
