Rising Manly NRL star Will Hopoate has made the shock decision to leave the game for two years to answer a call from the Mormon missionary.

The outstanding utility back will miss the 2012 and 2013 seasons to travel with the church before returning to rugby league in 2014.

The Sea Eagles are supporting Hopoate's move and will welcome him back when his stint with the church is over.

The teenager has turned his back on lucrative offers from Parramatta, Manly and Canterbury to devote the next two years to his faith.

The 19-year-old, who made his senior representative debut for City last week, will finish off the 2011 season before joining the Mormon missionary fulltime.

Hopoate's uncle Albert undertook a similar mission after quitting the Roosters in 2008.

A kid with so much talent will now amount to nothing, I really don't understand religion and why it's felt you need to throw it all away.

Such a waste .... well for now anyway.

Just for now?

Has anyone ever done their 2yrs and come back with the same "talent"?

No reason why he can't ?

He's only 18 years old isn't he ??

I'm not concerned about the age as yeah in the past you never made first grade till your 20s.

But i can't think of a player who actually came back to the game after their mission and had the same effect.

Don Bradman had much more than 2 years out and still did OK! [icon_razz1

I thought Hoppa was a smart kid? Clearly not. Religion is a joke, it is a breeding ground for pedo's

What a waste of fucking time. Mormons are dicks.

Rock? Seriously? Please.

Good luck to Will if he wants to pursue his mission to his imaginary friend, but it's such a bad look for Mormonism.

Well, if you feel so strong about it why don't you go and a 2yr mission?

He works his arse off to crack a first grade spot, earns a hefty pay check and then throws it all away for a stupid 2yr mission that i wouldnt be suprised he is only doing because Family and religion pressured him to do it.

Your previous comments made it look like you felt strongly about the choice he made.

I think its stupid because he is throwing away a career for the "chance" there will be a god there waiting for him when he dies. It just looks stupid to me that a young kid with the world at his feet is throwing it away for a church.

I'm agnostic, so religion says nothing to me.

It is and will always be a personal choice, albeit heavily influenced by family in general.

There are plenty of other religions out there that get under my skin, although mormons isn't one of them. They go about their business respectfully and with integrity, and should likewise be respected for that... [icon_shru

Sheesh, how the bloody hell are you not permanently banned from this place yet?[/quote:38btbqi0]
What for? Having an opinion.

Some of you are pretty bigotted. And unfortunately that only reflects poorly on your character not that of the people you are villifying.

If Will Hopa wants to go and do his mormon missionary, then good on him for being brave enough to do it. I hope he comes back and plays well.

However I will believe it when he goes. Remember Izzy was always going to do his mission, but decided to post-pone it after all the $$$ was thrown his way.

Also: The thing about the mormon missions is that you aren't allowed to marry until you've done your mission. He's probably sick of blueballs.

FTR I don't believe the mormon faith, it's too weird for me.

Yeah it is pretty weird.

So then the talking snake said to Adam, "Here, eat this magical apple"

Anyways, he obviously feels very strongly about it if he's giving up his footy and good money for 2 years. IMO it's a waste, even moreso because I think religion is balls. But it's his choice, each to their own.
