If draws were draws

We've had more golden point games this year than I can remember in a long time, and Peter Sterling makes an interesting observation:

For what it is worth I think the final eight should already have been decided. As an advocate of a draw being an acceptable result with no need for golden point, it makes interesting reading to look at what the table would now look like:

1. STORM – 42 points
2. SEA EAGLES – 40
3. BRONCOS – 37
4. COWBOYS – 33
5. DRAGONS – 31
6. TIGERS – 31
7. WARRIORS – 30
8. KNIGHTS – 27
9. BULLDOGS – 25
10. RABBITOHS – 24
11. ROOSTERS – 22
12. PENRITH – 21
13. CRONULLA – 18
14. PARRAMATTA – 18
15. CANBERRA – 18
16. TITANS – 15

The top 8 would be decided with the only doubt the positions of the Warriors, Tigers, Dragons and Cowboys based on this week's round.
The Titans would have the wooden spoon in their keeping.

So in a way, Golden point has setup a more interesting final round, with play offs for wooden spoon, 8th, as well as the scramble for 4th to 7th.

I like Golden Point

Looking at that table I am now an unabashed fan of golden point.

I can't regress to a system that would give Parramatta more points than they currently have!

But it has only set up a more interesting final round purely by chance/luck. Who knows, if the draw came back next year and we had 4-5 draws during the season, you could have 2 teams on 27 in 7th and 8th position and 2 teams on 26 points in 9th and 10th position with those teams playing each other etc.

Golden Point is ****, the game goes for 80 minutes. If you can't split them after 80 minutes then what does that tell you? Both teams should get a point each. But this whole BS about Golden Point (even Golden try is BS) where you get a lucky shot at a field goal or a penalty or whatever...it's just rubbish.

IMO, Golden Point gives a big advantage to teams like Souths who are simply better at slotting over a field goal. Sandow is a machine at it and if they make the 8, you can thank Chris Sandow and no one else.

Golden Point is **** because it's never a true reflection on who the best teams have been during the year. Souths would be no where near the top 8 right now and Parramatta (as much as I hate to admit it) should not be fighting for the spoon this week.

Agree completely.

But just to show a different scenario. Assume we keep GP and we make it 4 points for a regular time win, 3 points for a GP win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for a GP loss and 0 points for a regular time loss.

Melbourne 84
Manly 80
Broncos 75 (1 GP win)
Cowboys 65 (1 GP loss)
Tigers 63 (1 GP win)
Dragons 62 (1 GP draw)
Warriors 60
Knights 53 (1 GP loss)
Bulldogs 51 (1 GP win)
Rabbitohs 50 (2 GP wins)
Roosters 44 (1 GP win, 1 GP loss)
Panthers 43 (1 GP Win)
Sharks 36
Canberra 34 (2 GP losses)
Eels 34 (3 GP losses, 1 GP draw)
Titans 31 (1 GP win)

So this week's games would be even more interesting:
Knights vs Rabbitohs - if Knights won they would confirm top 8
Bulldogs vs Raiders - if Knights lose and Bulldogs won, Bulldogs would make top 8. If Bulldogs lost and Rabbitohs won, Rabbitohs would make the top 8.
Titans vs Eels - play off for last still

Warriors vs Cowboys - Warriors can't finish 4th, but if Cowboys win they lock up 4th spot
Dragons vs Panthers - Dragons win, Cowboys lose, Tigers lose, Dragons finish 4th
Tigers vs Sharks - Tigers win, Cowboys lose, Tigers finish 4th. Tigers lose and Warriors and Dragons win, Tigers finish 7th (6th if one or the other lose)

Personally i'd like to see it revert back to the old system ....

.. no points for a loss and no golden point.

Yep, me too. However, that's just not going to happen :-(

Yeah i know :(

I have a bad feeling that they'll implement a very complicated formula that'll really piss the fans off

I don't think they'll change anything.

I hate Golden Point.
I like Extra Time in finals/SOO/Tests, draw in the Regular season.

Why did they change it? Was it SOO?

Why did they change it in the first place. It seems more often then not things get changed and end up being **** a bit like Facebook

Yeah, New South Wails started wailing about drawn Origin series.

It wasn't their whinge to have either.

It wouldn't have been a draw if the video ref. was the full quid.

I don't know why this is discussed so often. Do people really hate GP that much?

I love golden point.

Helps make even the most dull games somewhat interesting.

I wish in finals they still had the 5 minutes (or it may have been 10, cant remember) and then after that go to golden point if scores are still locked together.

'

How does it make it more interesting though? I don't understand this one bit. If we were back in the 90's and had draws, if it's 20-20 with 1 minute to go, it was still exciting seeing players try and get the win with a field goal or a try or whatever. It was hell exciting. Only on the rare occasion did you see teams "concede" and just take a point each. If it was a game with high importance then you'd always get the excitment of final plays.

In fact, in today's game you see teams "concede" before the 80 minutes because you know they just want to have a rest and go into Golden Point...If there was no Golden Point, you'd have teams running around like headless chooks trying to get a point to win the game...which is exactly what happens in Goldent Point extra time anyway! So we've really just added 10 minutes onto each game...

Worst thing about GP is that after 10 minutes, if the scores can't be given....we give it a draw anyway! LOLZ. WTF? If you're going to have Golden Point then play to win, don't have a time limit on GP.

Good points.

The reason i hate extra time now is that it's so predictable ..... 5 sets of dummyhalf runs then a stab at a field goal

We as fans deserve better than that

When was the last game gp was won with a try?I'm thinking the roosters game against the tigers in the finals
