CALLS grow for Kevin Walters to save the Broncos but the winning Maroons coach won’t commit to an early coaching comeback at Red Hill.
Former Broncos great Gorden Tallis believes Walters — Wayne Bennett’s former right-hand man — could kickstart the club in their time of need and help struggling halves Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford.
Fans have been quick to back the calls of Tallis, who said the absence of Walters was the reason Hunt and Milford had lost last year’s “brilliant form”.
Walters is due to return to his old stomping ground next year but with Brisbane in a form slump, there are calls for him to return sooner.
But the Queensland coach said even if Brisbane sent out the SOS, his commitments could make that unlikely.
“I certainly enjoyed my time working at the Broncos,” he said.
“I have a lot of feelings for the place. I have spent a lot of time there as a player and on the staff. But I am not too sure about coming back.
“I would have to look at that if that opportunity did come up ... but I have commitments with Fox Sports and the Queensland Rugby League which still may not allow that.”
Walters said there had not even been discussions yet to confirm his return next season.
Instead, after his first series win as Queensland coach, Walters has remained hard at work with the QRL, reviewing the Origin series and preparing for next year.
He said he was not as concerned as others about his old club and believed Milford and Hunt could lead Brisbane back to the finals without his help.
“For them, it’s getting back to working hard on little bits of their game. Particularly when the Broncos have got the ball, it’s up to those boys to guide the team around and show leadership,” he said.
