Doran has moved to Tasmania- wow. I would have thought New South Wales would do everything to keep him.

16 years old- youngest ever NSW 2nd 11 player. Chappell and Hussey have both said he's ready for Shield, played in the Under 19 World Cup as a 17 year old.

Played PM 11 this year and the Thunder.

Tigers could have their replacement for Cowan and he is super long term.

Is he the one that scored the 170 odd in the U19 games this week?

This wont bother NSW. They always seem able to pluck some talented kid from the ranks and turn him into a test player. They have a good system for bringing these kids onto the international scene.

The last young Test batsman we produced was Clarke and that was 10 years ago.

David Warner, Steve Smith, Phillip Hughes & Usman Khawaja all say hi

Not really by design or with success though.

Warner was a T20 player who couldn't even get a shield game. I don't know the whole story behind it, but I never felt like he was identified as a future test batsman.

Ditto Steve Smith, who first played for us more as a leg spinner.

They have both become excellent test batsmen though.

Conversely, the intention always seemed to be there with Hughes and Khawaja but never really to great success so far. Sadly with Hughes we'll never know.

They're terrible examples.

Warner was 27 and couldn't make the Shield side at all. He got into the Test team via T20 for Australia.
Smith was 20 when he made his debut as a leg spinner and was then dropped for 2 years.
Hughes was 19 playing Shield, but couldn't nail down a Test spot at all.
Usman has played 9 Tests in 4 years and can't get in the team.

Clarke and before him Ponting are the only successful young batsmen we've had in the last 30 years. We have a terrible track record with young batsmen, even Ponting and Clarke got dropped but most of our batsmen don't show Test form till they're late 20's or early 30's.

Smith has sorted himself out now and is in great form at 25, but need to wait 10 years for it to pan out.

NSW has the biggest depth and cricket system in Australia. Due to containing 1/3 of Australia's population NSW produce more players than any other states and NSW talent filters through to the other states as well. In Jake Doran's case there will be plenty more than that came from.

Ben McDermott also off to Tasmania.. that's a big loss for the Bulls, he looked like a big prospect.

They are not terrible examples at all
They have all come through the NSW junior ranks and made their test debuts whilst plying their trade at NSW. The reason why most of the kids don't just walk into the test team and stay there is because they need to consistently scores runs to stay in the team and cant live off reputations like the older players. Clarke was even dropped after the 05 ashes too.
Warner started off at ODI and 20/20 then earned a chance at test matches and succeeded. As for Smith, he is 25 years of age so I doubt he was on the test scene at 15.

They're all terrible examples of having produced long term Test batsmen the last of which was Clarke which is what I was talking about. None of them have done it. In fact all bar Warner and Smith haven't even looked like it.

No one suggested Smith was there at 15- read what I said again.
