An air, sea and land search has so far failed to find a man who went missing after going for a paddle on a surf ski two days ago.

Police hold grave fears for Ryan Sainty, 20, who left his home in Park Avenue, Woy Woy, at about 12.30pm (AEST) on Friday.

Mr Sainty, an up-and-coming rugby league talent with the Newcastle Knights, took his surf ski with him, telling his mother he was going for a paddle for about an hour.

His mother called police at about 5pm when he hadn't come home.

Police say a man found the blue ski upside down on Brisbane Water with a paddle and a wind jacket tied to it.

"Representatives of the police air wing, Brisbane Water Local Area Command, the volunteer coastal patrol as well as waterways and so far there has been no sign of Mr Sainty or anything that could shed light on his disappearance," a NSW police spokeswoman told AAP.

This is another tragedy, especially given the Sonny Fai drowning earlier in the year.

She said the search would continue throughout the afternoon.

That seems really strange. Hopefully they find him somewhere but it doesn't look promising.

That sucks. Anyone seen him play?

I guess we'll be locked out for another 24 hours too?

no we won't. Not this year anyway. My understanding was we would do it one day a year to remember those who had part away the year before. Could be wrong though. Why don't you think we should bails?

Hehe, I think you can excuse him for assuming you were being sarcastic...since you're so good at it.

Terrible news.

Technically he's not a NYC player anymore as he's too old. Plays in the local comp.

In more positive news, Cory Paterson made a comeback in the local comp yesterday.

Correct - it'll be an annual thing to remember all league players/former players who have been lost in the past year icon_thumbs_u

Fingers crossed we won't have to for this one though [icon_pray.

SIX days after his disappearance, police are continuing to search for 20-year-old rugby league star Ryan Sainty, who went missing while paddling a surf ski near his NSW central coast home.

While his disappearance is not being treated as suspicious, investigators now want to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mr Sainty in the days before he went missing.

He was last seen about 12.30pm (AEST) on Friday, June 12, at his Woy Woy home when he told his mother he was going for a one-hour paddle.

He was reported missing about five hours later.

"A short time later a man advised police he found a blue surf ski about 200m off Saratoga about 4.30pm," police said.

"The surf ski was upside-down in the water with a paddle and wind jacket tied to it."

Air, land and sea searches have since failed to find the former Newcastle Knights player and efforts have been scaled back.

"At this time in our inquiry there is no suggestion of Ryan meeting foul play," Detective Inspector Graeme Parker said.

"Anyone who might have been in contact with Ryan in the days before his disappearance on 12 June is urged to contact us.

Today's water search will cover an area between Rip Bridge, Paddys and Lintern Channels.

Anyone with information about Mr Sainty is urged to contact police.

He is described as about 190cm tall, with short dark hair and an athletic build.
