League v Union

It is a great idea but it would be interesting to see what compromise either code made in terms of rules ie.team sizes, rucks, lineouts, play the balls, scrums etc because if they got that wrong the game could be very one sided one way or the other.

Very true. I'm guessing they would take some rules from each code - eg have line outs, and play the balls. Dunno bout team sizes though.

i remember some years back Wigan and a Union club had a 2 match series, one hybrid game more like Union, another more like League. From memory, the Union-type game went down to the wire, and the league one was a flogging to Wigan.

I think if they're going to do it it'd have to be something like that.

Something like what? a union type game?

Dude, it would be crazy. The forwards battle would be insane with the Wallabies having the size advantage but they would be no where near as fit as the Kangaroos. I would love to see someone like Mark Chisolm taking a league hit up, he is HUGE!

Whilst this would be one great event and something I would pay to watch live;

I can't understand;
a) What does this achieve (except revenue raising)?
b) How clubs wouldn't pressure the NRL/ARL(risking their players for what is effectively a Tribute match or a KFC Big Bash) to not let this go ahead?
c) How it would work (rules wise) and why it would be played as 12 v 12?
d) How Union forwards would be able to cope (without interchanges) making a 10 metre line after every tackle?
e) Why they would have unlimited tackles, thereby potentially ruining any flashy backline plays (which is what the drunken, ignorant, thick headed "fans" that will undoubtedly be 90% of the crowd for this sort of an event, came to see)? [d) slightly answers e) I suppose, because the pie-eating piggies from Yawnion, would need about 20 tackles in a row, to catch their breath once in possession.)]

They should play twice. Anyway the Wallabies are all ex-leaguies now aren't they?

I can answer one of your questions.

Quite simply, they couldn't.

Could you imaging Matt Dunning even attemtping to play a league game for 10 minutes, let alone one at the pace of the NRL? You'd need the ambulances on standby, that's for sure.

It would be funny I reckon. The kangas would have a good chance of winning both games (That is providing there was 1 game of league and 1 game of Union)... a lot of league players have somewhat of a background in Union anyway don't they?

1. Drew Mitchell
2. Lote Tuqiri
3. Stirling Mortlock
4. Ryan Cross/Timana Tahu
5. Adam Ashley-Cooper
6. Matt Giteau
7. Luke Burgess
8. Al Baxter
9. ??
10. Benn Robinson
11. Nathan Sharpe
12. Mark Chisholm
13. Wycliff Palu

vs

1. Karmichael Hunt (Pretty good b/g in Union as far as I know so chuck him at fullback)
2. Israel Folau
3. Justin Hodges
4. Greg Inglis
5. Billy Slater
6. Darren Lockyer
7. Johnathan Thurston
8. Petero Civoniceva
9. Cameron Smith
10. Steve Price
11. Anthony Laffranchi
12. Nate Myles
13. Paul Gallen

For the union game, Phil Waugh and George Smith would be the wallaby flankers obviously, and for the Kangas... Anthony Watmough and Anthony Tupou maybe?

Despite being uttely pointless, it would be interesting to see nonetheless.

Replace Gallen with Thaiday and on the bench you'd need to squeeze in Dallas Johnstone, his ability to tackle would be great in the Union game, he'd be in every second maul.

Ah yeah I forgot them. Actually, IMO Thaiday would be a decent flanker. Chuck Johnson at lock and have the flankers as Thaiday and Tupou eusa_think

Union would be won by the Wallabies, for the sheer fact that they'd simply dominate possession.

Nah, they'd win because the Kangaroos would die of boredom 10 minutes in.

Yes, he went to Churchie i believe (well i think it was Churchie...).

Hunt went to Churchie, all that extra private school discipline clearly did him the world of good.

And the roos would win a League match because all of the Wallaby forwards would have a heart attack ten minutes in,

Cut to the chase - Even better - 9 a side (touch if need be) footy game for charity

Imagine:
1-7 + 13 and 9 Kangaroos +3 reserves
9-15 + 6 and 7 Wallabies +3 reserves

Cos who really cares about a forwards matchup???
