Experienced prop Martin Taupau has committed to the Brisbane Broncos until the end of 2023.

Experienced prop Martin Taupau has committed to the Brisbane Broncos until the end of 2023.
The 32-year-old with 222 NRL games and 33 Tests for New Zealand and Samoa to his name provides valuable depth to the club’s middle forward stocks.

Broncos Coach Kevin Walters said: “Marty has been playing in the NRL since 2010 so he brings good experience and he was very impressive when we spoke to him on the values he brings to our club.

“We have a lot of good young middle forwards here at the Broncos and we believe the experience that Marty brings will help them grow and be better players for us as well.
“He has a real presence about him and I think that will really add to the group and what we are building here at the club both on and off the field.”

Can't complain about more experience in this side I guess, but if he isn't over the hill already, he's definitely near the summit.

In 2022, he didn't have a great year but not many people did at Manly. However, he was still good at poking his nose through and getting quick play the balls.

I don't think he's over the hill yet. He's still got something to offer.

last year he would have been one of the better bench forwards. he played an average 38 mins per game in 2022, averaging 11 runs for 99m and 19 tackles.

respectable numbers for a bench player ... especially as many people seem to use 100m gained as a par performance for a starter

Im not surprised you are unshakeably defending the decision, and I am happy about it too but anyone who actually watched him play would be pretty comfortable saying that stats don’t tell the story with Marty. He had a season to forget and at his age it’s probably not an anomaly.

I’m really keen to have him because we needed an older experienced forward who is bit more accomplished than Ryan James but let’s have realistic expectations for what he will bring.

He is a great signing as many have stated it would have been even better to have had him a few years ago but I bet he will offer more than Ryan James on field. What he offers off field will be a huge boost I think for our Polynesian boys. This guy is a real leader and somebody who will not be intimidated by egos.

I’d argue heaps more on field and slightly less off field than James. Will do a bit more for the poly/Māori demographic (like you said) who finds themelves in trouble a bit more in our squad e.g. Riki, Haas, Robati, Walsh. Also covers depth well in the middle forwards despite the fact I think he will be in the 17 for most the year with players missing at the start, origin period and if he plays well he might retain that for the back end of the season and let’s pray FINALS .

I'm downloading all of his games from 2022 and compiling all of the footage of his runs. All of them. We'll see whether he was as bad as people think.

It does bring back memories of Adam Blair, though. Everyone thought he was a terrible signing when it was first announced. How wrong we were.

The media haven’t got a clue half the time, they just speculate on what they think will happen based on the situation each club is in with with their roster. Then you get people with nothing better to do with their day who hang off each and every word as the gospel.

Like this Herbie speculation, any mug down the pub could tell you that two of Walsh, Herbie or Selwyn isn’t going to get to be the club’s fullback. Same with Flegler given our situation with rep forwards, one of them isn’t going to get that juicy contract after their current one and he makes the most sense given Payne is pumping out huge minutes consistently and Patty is basically the leader of the our team in the forwards.

Just on Fifita, people don’t go to the Titans to better their career, it’s just another club in the NRL capable of paying big dollars. He reminds me of Walsh in the sense that everytime I check him on instagram he’s hanging out with his Bronco teammates. Walsh is on record saying he barely missed watching a Bronco game while being under contract for the Warriors.

That’s awesome that you’re going to that effort and I’ll definitely watch it and appreciate it but his defence and lack of effort off the ball is his biggest issue. Anyone can run straight for 8 or so meres a dozen times a game.

Marty Taupau will be up there with the same influence to the club as Reynolds is I believe. Signing Taupau is one of the best signings we have made in the last 3 years. He is still playing some terrific footy, just look at his recent world cup form. He puts in 100% every run, hit and tackle and will be a great influence for our fellow players at the club.

I think you need to read those early Adam Blair threads, if you thought people were positive about us signing Teddy Blair you might be mistaken.
