The Courier-Mail can reveal the Broncos face a battle to retain McGuire, whose management has fielded three inquiries from Sydney-based outfits in the past month.

And Queensland are also in danger of losing McGuire, with the front-row firebrand eligible to represent New Zealand at the end-of-year Four Nations tournament.
At 24, McGuire is itching to break into the representative arena and can qualify for the Kiwis via his New Zealand-born mother Karlene if overlooked by the Maroons this year.
But McGuire’s more vexing concern is his future at Red Hill. Despite being Brisbane’s most consistent prop, he is one of the club’s lowest-paid starting forwards on $250,000 annually, earning less than a number of new recruits.

Could just be a ploy by his manager to get a higher figure from us, but if he does leave, just when you think our front row situation couldn't get any worse.

every player (or at least player manager) effectively tests their value on the open market, at the very least, to give them a better bargaining position when it comes to their current club.

McGuire will get a decent upgrade if he stays with us, and i think both him and his manager know this

I've always felt front rowers, along with wingers, are the easiest to replace.

If McGuire leaves, we will just find someone else that can do his job.

Can't really agree with that. We didn't "replace" Civo when he left for years, and it arguably cost us a premiership. I also think a poor front row is the toughest thing to get away with, after a poor spine.

We already have a massive monkey on our back in the form of Martin Kennedy. The last thing we need is to lose our best front rower, especially as Hannant's future is uncertain.

Anderson, Clinton, Dodds, Kenny, Sims, Tronc.

Harsh to put Dodds in that group. Granted he showed a lot of promise in his debut season and just didn't kick on. Pet came back. then Hook went with his 'Thaiday at Prop' idea. Also along with Anderpson was Lui and on the odd occasion Slyney and Tasi (all 7 minutes of him) and we know how bad Hook is using his bench. Then got injured + Kennedy signed but also Parker at Prop. Started coming good again at the end of last year. He'll be right. Kenny was solid if unspectacular, an honest toiler. The rest, well ..... yeah

I too disagree with the notion of props being easy to replace. Name me 5 equally interchangeable props that are off contract at the end of the year

I never said they were easy to replace.

I said they were the easiest to replace.. Compared to other positions such as fullback, centre, 5/8, halfback, hooker..

I'm not implying that replacing them is easy..

Just give him what kennedy is on and push Kennedy to the Titans

I hope he stays, but can fully understand him wanting to 'test his worth' in an open market.

As the article says, it's a business decision he has to make.... so good luck to him.

He would be sorely missed if he does go though as i believe he's our top prop at the moment.

"Fielding offers from elsewhere" doesn't mean anything. I would expect there would be a dozen of our players whose managers regularly "field offers" from rival clubs. The managers wouldn't be doing their job if they were oblivious to their players pulling power.

I'm more concerned about the "if Qld don't choose me I'll play for NZ" line. Again, it's probably nothing because there are no quotes, only research on his eligibility, but I really hate the thought of players holding clubs / selectors to ransom. Either he's good enough or he's not. He'll certainly get his chance for Qld, only a matter of time.

**** Kennedy off and split the money between McGuire and Hannant
We haven't spend all this time developing McGuire to let him leave in his prime and carry some other club

Agreed. McGuire is one of the few players of ours that looked ready right from his first grade debut IMO. Of all the players like Beale, Norman, Gagai, etc, McGuire is the Broncos.

He'll be starting for Queensland within a few years, not sure why he'd go play for un zud, considering he'll be well behind Moa, JWH & Bromwich for a long, long time.

I don't for a second think he will leave.

Me either. Hardly a surprise that other clubs are having a sniff: that's how the game works.

I would hope we table him a good offer. He's not in that top tier of props, but he's still very good. Hard running, hard hitting, big motor, and I've yet to see him give anything less than his all.
