NEWS Milford Discussion Thread

I think if your a player whether your in a form slump or on top of your game if someone of the calibre of Darren Lockyer offers to help you with your game you take it. That's where I see a attitude problem with Milford.
On the face of it Johnny...you're 100% correct again.......

However, I have niggling questions in my mind like;

a) How did Locky come at him? Part of any good mentorship, relies heavily on mutual respect.
b) Now that Darren Lockyer isn't a god on the field, I suspect he's a bit of a fuckwit off it. As an administrator for the club, he's been pretty fucken hopeless. The state we're in, he has to be held partly responsible. He doesn't.... at least outwardly, appear to have the current players ear.....
He seems distant and certainly doesn't have the same relationship with the playing group as someone like Alfie looks to have.
c) That hair change.....it only exacerbates my concerns for his possible fuckwitisms.

I dont really like the bloke, but i've heard nothing but good things about his coaching. Gives his time to anyone who wants it.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I love the guy as a commentator. One of the games best play by play analysts by far imo.

Actually you are wrong, they did that with Matty Johns, they also sent him and the other halves down to North Melbourne to receive specialised skill training on their kicking.

In a bid to extract the best of his playmaking spine, Broncos coach Anthony Seibold sent Milford, Darius Boyd, Andrew McCullough and Kodi Nikorima to Sydney over summer to work closely with former Origin and Test pivot Johns.

Johns said he was particularly impressed by Milford, insisting the 24-year-old was reaching a critical mid-point of his career where his talent and desire would combine to make him as dominant as retired champion Thurston.

Anthony Milford’s quest for perfection in his kicking game took another step forward last week where he credits sessions at the North Melbourne Kangaroos for fine-tuning his ball drop.

Milford, Kodi Nikorima, Andrew McCullough, Jamayne Isaako and assistant coach Kurt Richards spent two days of professional development at the Kangaroos last week.
That can't be right....Milford is a lazy ****. Everyone here says so.

Why get so defensive about having an agenda? We are posting our opinions and bias on a public forum. We all have agendas in one shape or form. It's not a bad thing.

As I said, I've seen first hand Milf do some stuff I didn't like, in front of senior Broncos staff as well I might add and not be pulled up on it. I'm also happy to trust the opinions of people who have played and trained with the bloke for years.

You seem to ignore I've clearly said Milf himself has been a problem. And he has. You can't dress it up any differently. You keep posting what he didn't do, and nobody as far as I can see disagrees with that. But in terms of what more the club could have done ,I'm also saying they could have tolerated far less of some of his off field behaviour. They could have demanded more from him in training and on the field seeing as we were paying him a huge contract. There is no reason at all he couldn't have been told raise your standards and professionalism or you are out the team. They didn't do that until this year. As I said, he's been allowed to coast and keep getting picked on the back of under performance. Nobody tried to bring in some outside help to bring more out of him like a Matty John's for example. He turned Locky down and that was that. We left him to his own devices.

Taylor and Milf are only really similar in terms of them wasting their ability. Dave was lazy, where I don't think Milf is. Milf does what he has to do and no more. Both should have had much better careers than they did have , but I think they have blown it for different reasons.
I can see how I came across as having a problem with ‘the agenda argument’, but that’s only because so often people on here fall back on that as an easy out, rather than acknowledge well rounded discussion. I would like to believe I form my opinions based on what I see or know, not how I feel about someone. To me, that is not an agenda, that’s critical thinking and analysis.

I do also want to clarify, I don’t disagree with you (or anyone else) when you say the club is blameless, as there is always two sides to every story.

However, the problem clubs have these days with disciplining players is that if the player feels like they’re being unfairly treated or it’s just too hard, they agitate for a release. The player then gets it and the only party that suffers is the club, whilst the player gets off scott-free and goes on to simply sign with another club. It’s for that reason that most of the weaker clubs, which we have very much been over the last few years, are less inclined to do anything that may get their players off side.

I do seem to recall though that the club actually did get MJohns in at least one off season, or am I remembering wrong? I seem to recall he then went on to wax lyrical about how good our halves were?

Yes and no. He is renowned as a bloke who gives his players great life advice. If he didn’t give this advice then…wtf? Also if he did give this advice and it was ignored then equally…wtf?
I don't think WB is the sort to hold it against you if you didn't take his advice. I think if you clearly defined your position in the discussion and believed it, he'd respect you for owning your own decision and living with it.

If he saw it was failing if he was able to, I'm sure he'd interject with a gentle I told you so.....

Unfortunately WB wasn't around when Milford really started hitting the skids. The club and its ultimate wisdom decided to replace Wayne with Anthony Seibold.

I think when he retired i just kind of presumed he would pretty much go into coaching after a short break. I thought with his knowledge of the game it would have been a no brainer for him to coach in some capacity with us, which is why i'm a bit surprised he didnt.

I dont think he is coaching material purely based on a few of the blokes i know who have been around him. He knows about the game obviously, but whenever he has got approached he was kind of a bit distant and didnt seem to want to get involved too much. Could have been his role as a director i guess getting in the way, but compared to somebody like Joey he doesnt seem to want to help develop some of these players.
He appears like he wants nothing to fucken do with it.

I think we all have agendas mate tbh. I think if you have an opinion about something, positive or negative then there is an agenda there to some degree. Some people could call it a bias i guess, but thats all part of having an opinion. I know i certainly have them.

As far as i'm aware, we sent a few of our halves to see Matty over a spell of a couple of weeks in 2019, i think when Seibs first came here iirc. It wasnt an ongoing arrangement like he had with the Storm and especially Cronk, which is the type of thing i reckon Milf needed. A few sessions may help to a point, but i think its ongoing coaching and fine tuning that he was really in need of, hence me saying i dont think we ever bought in anyone from outside to help him out, i wasnt really meaning just a short term thing. Error on my part.

Nice post......

When did this happen?

p.s I believe WB did have him firing......

Tough one....fucked if I know. But I do know this, the club has much more finances and resources than I do, to figure it out. 90% of this is on Anthony......the club IMHO, has to take up the remaining 10%.
We had the customary articles every offseason and preseason that would go on about how Milford needed support on the field (which was actually true) and that they just wanted him to think run first, second and third ad nauseam.

You are right, Bennett (and Walters) definitely had him purring in 2015 and some of ‘16, no doubt about that. But he fell off a cliff quicker than a bag of shit after that.

I also don’t have a problem lumping 10% of the responsibility at the clubs feet. It’s the notion that the club in some way was obliged to give him special treatment (as if his $1million salary wasn’t special enough) to ensure he could succeed that rubs me the wrong way. Seriously, time to put the big boy pants on Anthony and recognise the opportunity you have and the responsibility that goes with it (to be clear, im not saying this is what you’re saying).

Again on this......

Milford appears to be putting in the work/some work. Just what the **** happened.......?

If I'm the club......with all my resources, and I brought Anthony to the club to essentially take over from Darren Lockyer (which I believe he could/should have)...the Milford case would be completely doing my head in and I would have invested in any means possible to get an answer.......or at least something that I could reconcile as being the best answer I could have.

I don't believe the Brisbane Broncos did that........

How am I shifting goalposts? I made a mistake by not making myself clearer about what I meant when I said get in some outside help. I was talking about an appointment to our coaching staff rather than a week or two with somebody. So yep, you got me.

Still changes nothing though. We sent him to Johns for some advice and help. Once that finished, who did we have on hand to keep tweaking his game? If we were doing our job properly, Johns or somebody like him would have been available to us when we need him. He wasn't.

Like it or not, as a club, we could have done a lot more to try to get more out of Milf.
Alf knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a successful half at the Broncos (and all other levels for that matter).

Considering he lives and breathes the Broncos, I’m sure he would have been more than happy to help Milf if he’d asked for it.

But given he’d already publicly declared he didn’t want Lockyers help, I don’t blame Alf for not offering.

You would think Alf would be more than happy to help. I honestly dont know what Alf's coaching is like tbh. Its something i've never actually thought about. He's a great character to have around but can he get his points across in a coaching situation?

Can you elaborate on this?

Yeah it may come down to how he approached it.
But I think your right with him being distant from the playing group, I dont recall seeing a photos of lockyer down with the boys like you see with the likes of Hancock, Petero, Thaiday etc.. yeah their employed in different roles but still employed by the broncos.
I remember Denan Kemp saying on one of his Podcasts that Mick Hancock offered to help him and he knocked it back only for Denan to go back to him get tips off him which he said helped him out alot, Milford should of done the same.

I mentioned it earlier, but the bit more in depth story is he was playing the pokies and a guy went up to him after an autograph and Milf just went off at him. I know for a fact Mclean, Ross and Morris were there, and i'm pretty sure Seibold and White were around as well. I've seen him be a bit short with fans a few times tbh. He didnt throw out the abuse Kotoni did in his incident, but he was certainly out of order. I've actually been amazed it never made the press tbh. If he did that sort of thing on Bennetts watch i think Wayne would have torn strips off him. Big thing with Wayne is you give your time to the fans as without them you are nothing.

I made the Dave Taylor comparison earlier and I think it’s at least partly accurate.

I recall Bennett said coaching Taylor would do your head in, or words to that effect.

Now I’m not saying Milford is the exact same, but it seems he does (or did) have a penchant for doing only the bare minimum which, once other clubs figured him out, simply wasn’t enough.

This then lead to him to becoming less effective and eventually spiralling out of control, with everything the club tried either failing or making it worse until the point where they finally gave up.

I honestly don’t think Milford has the desire, drive or care to extract anything more from himself other than his natural talent. Which was another major disappointment with Dave Taylor.

Dave was just like a big dumb kid really. I dont think he even did the minimum a lot of the time. He never wanted to train or look after himself, he just wanted to turn up on game day and play. He didnt want to put in the hard yards in terms of his preparation. Milf is a lot different to that. Didnt bother him to train, but like you said, its his desire thats the issue. Didnt really do extras, just turned up, did what he needed to do and went home.

Have to admit....the non-Alf/Milf relationship, puzzles me and does start to "allude" to the root cause of the problem .........being Milford.
I respect Alf's ability to communicate with the playing staff greatly......

I've also followed Milford's career since he was u/13..........and whilst not knowing him, have been in and around plenty of people close enough to him, who have reported that he was a level-headed kid.

I'm a 1+1 = 2 kinda guy.......

I'll say it to the cows come home, player managers...are who is really fucking our game.
