Katoa was good, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game was his mentality.

I'm referring to the moment he tried to trap that kick-off immediately after the Dolphins scored their first try. He made an absolute meal off it, and the Roosters scored a couple of plays later.

Most young blokes on debut would go right back into their shell after that, wanting the world to swallow them up. But he didn't dwell on it, or let it affect his game, he just got on with it. Shows a lot of character for a young fella, especially considering the context of the match.

If this were Flegs you wouldn't bother challenging. That was some Oliver Khan level defense and it ended up dangerous.

NRL have said they made the wrong call here and Melbourne should have been penalised.

“Last year and in previous seasons, what we’ve seen is if the play breaks down in that tackle because there’s any kind of interference by the defender [it’s been a penalty],” Annesley said.


“[This year], if there is a ball plant that is essentially the first offence. If the ruck breaks down…they [the Bunker] will firstly look to see if the player tried to play the ball too quickly.

“Unfortunately, the Bunker came up with the wrong decision. This is clearly one of the cases we talked about and discussed with the clubs [in the off-season].


“Hopefully, the referees will deal with this consistently throughout the course of the year.


“It’s a shame we’re talking about an incorrect decision of this in week one but it’s important we understand the principle and the expectation around these type of incidents in games.”

"it’s important we understand the principle and the expectation around these type of incidents in games", as in, the expectations are that the clubs and fans just have to cop it, even though it's blatantly wrong, despite multiple angles and sufficient time to review it properly. And just so happened to be extremely important in the momentum that allowed the Storm to win the game at the death.

Every Storm game I remember that's close, they seem to get some controversial BS call go their way in the dying minutes.
