RUGBY league often resembles a soap opera - now it's taking on reality TV in a series described as a mixture of Australian Idol, Survivor and Big Brother .

In a week in which the game's reputation has been trashed because of the Greg Inglis saga, filming is about to start on a 14-part series.

NRL Dream will give aspiring players aged from 17 to 25 a shot at the big-time.

Only problem is Ben Ikin & Paul Harrigon are involved.

I think Rugby League has reached the bottom of the barrel on this.

No different to that Football Superstar show on SBS or Foxtel or whatever. Might be interesting.

Surely this is allowed its own thread instead of having to trawl through general talk lol

Did you see me lock the thread..... ahhh no. Just pointing out that it was mentioned here. LOLZ

Oh no... tacky edited reality TV... ugh.
On the other hand if it really gives some potential kids great media exposure that would be a great result. I just reaaaaaaaaaally hope they don't make it too tacky.

Wonder if they get to go fishing with Andrew Ettingshausen.

Sounds like a updated version of It's A Knockout.

This sounds retarded. There is no way they will produce first grade talent. Maybe a Toyota Cup or a lower grade player but I can't see this show producing an elite league player. All the good players are already in the system. The best chance they have is finding a natural athlete and hoping he can learn the basics. Still, what an insult to all the players busting their gut from their junior days trying to make it in the NRL.

How have the winners from Foxtel's crappy "Football Superstar" gone? Did they even have a chance of playing an ALeague game?

The stupid thing is any player worth their salt is already on scholarship or signed up by 17 years of age.

How can this show not fail.

Ikin & The Chief are involved. [icon_razz1

Off topic question:

Do RL players really show their stuff by 17 though? Seems like such a young age. Surely there must be a significant number of late bloomers lost in the system? Mainly 22-24 year olds?

Exactly. I really don't see a point in this show but hey could be good to watch.

I wouldn't say that they 'show their stuff' - but they show glimpses of what they have the ability to do. Chris Sandow, Isreal Folau, Antonio Winterstein, Karmichael Hunt etc were all scouted when they were around 17 - there are some that are scouted even earlier.

A good mate of mine was receiving money from Melbourne when he was playing for Norths a few years back. He was 16 or 17 at the time.

Theres a show over here on Maori Television called Ngati NRL, focuses on young guys in the lower leagues trying to get their big break. Very good.

I like that show. Just wish they would update it here with some more teams and players. They are till showing the 2008 eps here and it is on National Indigenous Television channel on Foxtel.

Yeah, they get to go fishing with ET right after they record a Lowes advert with Paul Sironen

Apparently Kyle Sandilands will be one of the judges.

Yeah this is true, however 90% of these kids that are on scholarsihps or contracts at an early age pack it in before they turn 20. Because they have gone from dominating junior footy they can't hanlde the fact that there are players better than them, they get on the drink too much, get homesick et al.

I think the show could/would work, whether or not guys will play NRL out of it would be another question, but at least will give some guys the opportunity to have a taste of it.

Would be interesting to see if guys who are QCup players or Jim Beam Cup players will enter, or just nuffbags who think they are orsm.
