apparently they've requested the world cup be played in 2022 instead.

without Australia and NZ, then the RLIF will have to comply

From my understanding, the UK government won’t give funding if it’s next year.

There’s also the other problem of the FIFA World Cup being on at the same time so that will overshadow our World Cup significantly.

If they are going to post pone it, it needs to be 2023. Or just cancel the World Cup and focus on 2025.

I can't agree with the NRL, Australia and NZRL decision, other international codes have held events and RL is in a massively crucial period to build the international game, I would allow players that don't want to take part due to health reasons but we should still take what we can. RL in UK is in a dire situation and the fact their government has backed it has to be taken advantage of, UK has an incredibly high vaccination rate and while covid cases are high the players would be in a bubble anyway with most I hope vaccinated.

Our code has a huge growth problem and this decision is short sighted.

The players seem quite unhappy again as once again he decision was made without consulting them. Vlandys really loves his little kingdom dictatorship doesn’t he.

reports coming through that despite being favourites for the GF, Brisbane are facing a fight from Melbourne to host the GF

Man if I was in Brisbane or even being here in Melbourne, no way do I want to pay ridiculous amounts of money to go and watch the Storm win again or Penrith get leg up or leg up to produce an artificial result.,

At first glance it looks fucked but Melbourne actually have a chance of being there so would not surprise in the least if the Nswrl gave the middle finger to Brisbane again. I’d go along for a look if it were in Melbourne.

I wouldn't, not even think once about it. I'd prefer to go the AFL finals.

Yeah, Melbourne getting a GF before Brisbane is about right for the N(SW)RL

Makes sense, I mean Queensland literally kept the game afloat when Gladys decided to **** her state in the ass so why wouldn't we have to fight with Melbourne for the GF.
Are AFL and NRL anticipated to be on the same weekend this year??

Would be a big call to try and compete with the AFL in their home state on GF weekend... NRL could very well become an after thought down there... although the Vic govt would be pushing it as a huge 'sporting event' to have both GF's in Melb on the same weekend.

I can definitely see the advertising appeal

I'd prefer to go to sleep, than watch either of them LOL

But truly, I get why QLD "should" get the NRL GF over VIC, but would anyone living in QLD really want to go and watch Melbourne V Penrith or whatever?

Expansion talks have been suspended due to the current COVID situation that could cost the NRL $45 million (to relocate all teams)

according to the CM, this is likely to mean the second Brisbane team will be delayed until 2024 at the earliest.

Vlandys says:

“The analysis of expansion has stopped for the moment,” V’landys said.

“I have said to the clubs that the work on expansion has stopped for the moment, but the work will recommence on it.”

Asked if expansion has been officially delayed until 2024, V’landys said: “We haven’t made a final decision one way or the other.

“That’s all that has happened. Once we can recommence, we will know what direction to take.

“I’m the chairman of the board and it’s not true to say expansion is absolutely off (for 2023). The ARL Commission will make the final decision.

“We have put the tools down on expansion and until we pick up the tools again, I can’t tell you if we will have another team for 2023.

“We have a lot of variables we have to consider, including the current challenges (of keeping the NRL competition alive in Queensland).”

Brisbane Jets bid chief Nick Livermore says:

“I’ve always felt October is the time by which we ideally need to have an answer (on expansion),” he said.

“I believe you can bring in a team within 12 months, but what you need is more time to maximise the opportunity to commercialise the club and drive revenue for a 2023 entry.

“Expansion is historically aligned with TV deals in rugby league, but what we have seen over the past two years shows nothing is normal when Covid is impacting so many businesses, including rugby league.

“The game has a responsibility to its 16 teams and state bodies and I think the leadership has shown they are committed to doing whatever they can to keep the game going.

“If that means any growth strategy for the game has to be temporarily suspended, I don’t think anyone can argue against that to ensure the NRL competition is sustainable.

“The ARL Commission would be aware of the risk factor of delaying expansion too long, especially with the AFL targeting Brisbane’s western corridor, which is the highest-growing population area in Queensland.

“We are at risk of losing ground to the AFL, but that may be a short-term risk we have to take to ensure the game’s stability.”

But Vlando has been telling us the second Brisbane team is a money maker FFS!!

Why wouldn't they want to bring them in to recoup all this covid cash they've lost.

Should be trying to bring them in for 2022!!!

🙄🙄🙄

Australia/NZ pulling out makes the world cup so much more interesting.

If all those players choose to represent their 2nd tier nations, this could be some of the best international games we'll ever get.

you guys will probably get a kick out of this.

Fox sports are reporting that in order to save costs the NRL wanted to put both Roosters, Eels and match officials on the same flight from Brisbane to Mackay for last nights match.

the clubs refused and after some behind-the-scenes "blow-ups" both clubs negotiated leaving from their respective headquarters on separate planes.

the Sunshine Coast based referees were on the same flight as ... yep, you guessed it the Rorters.
