NRL Players and family members in hot water

THE mother of Ben Barba’s four daughters has pleaded with the North Queensland Cowboys not to sack him over an alleged public domestic violence incident at a casino, where he allegedly hurled rocks at her.
The Sunday Mail can reveal Barba’s partner Ainslie Currie was reluctant for the Cowboys to punt the player once crowned rugby league’s best.

Greenberg: ‘Not on my watch’
The Cowboys sacked Barba on Friday after the incident at Townsville’s Ville Resort Casino over the Australia Day weekend.
He is now set to be rubbed out of the NRL forever and could also be charged by police.
Ms Currie – who had a bloodied face after another alleged domestic violence incident with Barba in 2013 – is understood to have claimed the latest matter was private, and had concerns about her family’s financial stability without Barba’s income.
But the Cowboys immediately terminated Barba’s $300,000 contract after seeing CCTV footage of the incident.

The Sunday Mail can reveal the couple, who had spent more than seven hours at the casino with several Cowboys players and partners, caught a taxi moments after the incident.
It is understood police and the NRL’s integrity unit will investigate three alleged incidents including a heated verbal exchange in the pool area in front of hotel guests, several Cowboys players and their partners, an alleged physical clash inside the casino that was caught on CCTV, and an alleged clash in the car park before they got into the taxi.
Barba and Currie remain together, and were spotted having lunch the next day with their young family.
The Cowboys were shocked when informed of what had happened on Monday.
Barba trained on Tuesday in what would be his final session.
“He had settled in really well, he was popular … and had been outstanding at training,” coach Paul Green said.
“He seemed happy in his new environment and everything was going well.
“There were absolutely no signs of any issues.”

The incident happened at Townsville’s Ville Resort-Casino.
Cowboys supporters and the Rugby League Players Association backed the decision to axe Barba, saying violence against women could not be tolerated.
Association boss Ian Prendergast said Barba had returned to the NRL well aware that any behavioural issues would result in his deregistration.
“It appears his professional career in the NRL is now over,” Mr Prendergast said.
The scandal is just the latest off-season incident involving NRL stars, following aggravated sexual assault charges against Jarryd Hayne and Jack de Belin.
Furious Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter Beattie said that after a brilliant 2018 season, “off-field, it has been a train wreck for our fans” and “the game has to take a tough stand against domestic violence or it has no future”.
Barba and Ms Currie were high school sweethearts in Mackay and have been together for more than a decade.
Domestic Violence Prevention Centre boss Rosie O’Malley would not comment on the Barba case but said there were many reasons women stayed in violent relationships.

I hate to blame females in this situation and barba is clearly a piece of crap but i don't think any 1 can say this woman is innocent in all this. Its clear she is also a toxic person and this is a toxic relationship.

Still I don't see any world were barba ever plays nrl again.

It seems that she is an enabler, the worst kind of person for someone like Barba. The guy is a loser but her saying it’s a private matter and they need the money shows the problem that she feels trapped in a never ending cycle. She’s also been with him since high school, she likely thinks this kind of abusive relationship is normal. Sad.

So we still made it to the GF without the influence of JT. Was it Morgan that year that was twisting the refs arms then?

Let’s be honest about the Cowboys record. You had the 2nd greatest player of his generation for something like 13 years and you only got 1 premiership out of him and that premiership was from an almighty choke from the Broncos. You can tak about defeating big brother in finals all you like, but the fact is you have 1 premiership from 20 plus years despite the services of Thurston and other very successful players. You also let Slater go to Melbourne even though he was in your system and have had other high profile Origin players and still only have 1 premiership to account for it. We have the same amount of premierships as the Cowboya since 2006 and way more of you want to go back to your innagural year. Cowboys fans need to get a severe dose of reality.

To be fair, the Broncs let JT get away despite growing up in their old feeder club town and also more recently lost Ponga from the system.

It's probably a conversation that should be had whenever this happens. It's not victim blaming to seek the full picture.

Well unless the full picture involves her attacking him physical, and not in retaliation or defence then I see what the conversation can be.

To be honest, and I mean it was no disrespect, I wouldn't expect you, or a number of others to agree with that fact that even in domestic cases, there are two sides to the story.

When two males have a fight and we read about it, it's either written off and accepted as something that happens, or we question what the other bloke did to get hit. It shouldn't be different here. It should have nothing to do with trying to play down that the scum bag is absolutely in the wrong, and it's not looking for a reason to excuse his behaviour in anyway. But both sides to the story should be aired.

That’s fine mate, but when we are talking about physical violence against women I don’t see the point in hearing the other side. I don’t care if she emotionally or verbally abused him, it isn’t an excuse for physical violence against a woman. IMO, especially when you consider he physical disparity between the two even if she attacked him physically there is no excuse if it is past the point of self-defence.

I know you won’t agree with this and based on recent discussions several others on here won’t, and that’s fine. If this makes me a snowflake then that’s cool too, on this topic I am happy to be the biggest mother fucking snowflake you have ever seen.

This topic is relevant to the discussion but let's keep this particular part of the debate to the controversial thread thanks, this is for NRL players in hot water.

That Barba sacking was a loooong time coming. I'm amazed he's was still playing after the Bulldogs, to be honest. When you can't meet their obviously stringent standards of behaviour, you'd think the next place would prison or a mental asylum.
That he got a chance with the Broncos, and then blew it was amazing. That he got a chance with the sharks (the one club that had standards of behaviour lower than the dogs, another minor miracle for him. Then after a dodgy super league stint he goes to the cowboys and somehow convinces them, he's worth another shot?
And then, after all that, he manages to stuff up again? How does he manage to talk his way into it? I thought the Donald was good with that kind of thing, but he could learn a thing or two from Barba.

You guys let Smith, Cronk and JT go from right under your noses. Ouch. Haven’t won a thing since Locky retired. Bet those players would of been handy to call upon.

Have the most resources of any club being the only team in a what 3-4 million city population. Severe under achievers for over a decade. Must hurt.

Tell ya what, if you're just going to be a generic opposition troll you're going to get boring real quick.

We have plenty of non-Broncos supporters on this board and it's always good light hearted banter. At least try to be funny, you've repeated yourself about 7 times in 15 posts.

For the record, lol @ cows. How was fighting Parra for the wooden spoon last year?

How was the end to the 2015 season? Lol @ donkies yea?
