do transfer fee's have to be counted on a clubs salary cap?

I ask because, it is being reported that the Sharks are prepared to release Josh Morris if the Roosters pay the Sharks 100k and the Sharks get to keep Morris for the early rounds of the season (specifically until Moylan returns)

Yes they are, but I'm starting to think they shouldn't be.

It's not like transfer fees are a deterrent on players moving clubs, it just means one club gains a player mid contract for free and the other club loses a player for nothing.

Matterson stood around training kicking stones until he got his move and eels didn't have to pay anything... if transfer fees were separate from the cap they could've held parra to ransom and at least got something out of it.

Same with titans who were pressured to release Arrow to Souths... they would've got nothing, but if transfer fees were available they could've said to Souths, give us $1m and you can have him.

Players are still going to big clubs so having transfer fees in the cap obviously isn't stopping players moving mid contract... at least make the big clubs pay out of their ass to get them

Club should be able to pay cap space to other clubs to negotiate a release. For example when we let Ash Taylor go early to the titans, the titans should have given us 100k of their salary cap that we could spend on our own players or put towards bringing someone else in. It’s also an incentive for clubs to develop juniors with the plan to sell them for extra cap space.

That's pretty much the scheme they currently have except the selling team get a minor amount of salary cap back.

The cap is too tight for teams to be giving up cap space and in the current environment they just wait around until the player forces a move by not putting in.

The NRL have lost total control of player movements by allowing them to act as they currently are

It's hardly an NRL isolated issue. Players force the issue in exactly the same fashion in all the major football leagues around the world, and they already have transfer fees and trades available to them.

The NRL 29-Man rosters were finalised today.

Canberra: Upgraded Matt Frawley
Manly: Upgraded Josh Schuster
Newcastle: Signed Tyronne Roberts-Davis, upgraded Tex Hoy, added Chris Randall to the Development Squad.
Warriors: Signed Jamayne Taunoa-Brown
St George Illawarra Dragons: Upgraded Adam Clune, signed Billy Brittain, added Cody Ramsey to the development squad.
Sydney Roosters: Upgraded Daniel Suluka-Fifita and Christian Tuipulotu, added Lani Graham-Taufa and Moala Lani-Taufa to Development Squad

Technically neither the signings from Newcastle or the Warriors were new signings, they had actually been made across the last week but I had missed them. I had a similar miss with Parramatta who I had at 28 players, having missed Rhys Davies' signing.

Schuster was also upgraded to the Manly NRL squad, so they're officially at 30 players.

To show you how much of a mess this is, Big League, the official print magazine has all sorts of mistakes. Their Manly squad has Anderson, Miski and Musgrove in their squad and no sign of Tony Williams. Their Newcastle side has all their development squad players included and probably their biggest over-sight is the inclusion of Lachlan Timm in the St George Illawarra squad.

That's without all the new signings in the past fortnight.

True, but in other leagues typically the team that the player leaves gets something in return (a player (or draft picks in the US) via a trade or money via a transfer fee).

My issue with the NRL is that the system is setup so a team can lose a very valuable player for nothing mid-contract (ie. Matterson to the eels).

I think if transfer fees were separate from the cap then the tigers could've at least got some money in return.

I think the NRL doesn't do enough to stop players leaving for free... I have no issue with players moving mid-contract I just have issues with the NRL sitting back and allowing them to leave and one club being significantly worse off.

I think the NRL should almost come in and act as a mediator when a player wants to leave. Clearly the clubs, managers and players aren't able to sort out fair deals when a player wants to leave so until it becomes the norm for clubs to pay or trade for players then I think the NRL should be stepping in to ensure all parties get a fair outcome.

"the NRL should be stepping in to ensure all parties get a fair outcome"
That would require a level of competence that the NRL quite frankly do not have.
I like the idea though, it's spot on, if only we had a governing body that were not barely 3 stooges level of intelligence.

"permission to talk" meaning that when they come to sign him Uncle Nick will laugh at them and tell them to get the **** out of his office.

NRL.com reporting that the swap (loan) deal between the Tigers and Storm for Grant and Momorovski has gone ahead

Please explain
not much to explain really.

Harry Grant will play for the Tigers in 2020 before heading back to the Storm in 2021

and vice versa for Paul Momorovski.

obviously assuming the 2020 season resumes at some point.

the reason it was initially held up was their difference in salaries. apparently it would have pushed the storm over the cap by 16k ... so maybe the Tigers paying an extra month of Momorovski's salary pushed them under the limit.

Could've seen this coming from beyond the horizon. Frizell is straight up done with Mary's shit and I don't blame him. He's a competitor, he wants to win premierships. Honestly we could have really used him up here, that attitude would be great to rub off on our young guys. I honestly would have approached Merge and offered them a swap deal for TPJ or Joe O.

I got the feeling that it’s more about Jack De Belin. Don’t think Friz is all that happy about how he’s been supported by the club, plus doesn’t want anything to do with him. There was something about this a year ago IIRC.

he hasn't gone to a club where he'll win a premiership anytime soon
