Cashed-up NRL to review salary cap arrangements

Last week it was reported that the second-tier cap was to rise to $440,000 per club this season to avoid situations like last year when boom rookies Luke Brooks and Matt Moylan were unable to play NRL without Wests Tigers and Penrith seeking dispensation.
Other changes being considered are understood to include:
❏ Clubs being able to sign players from outside the NRL, even if they did not fit in the cap;
❏ Centrally contracting big-name players through ''ambassador'' payments from the NRL;
❏ Including transfer fees in the cap, such as the $300,000 Brisbane paid Canterbury to release fullback Ben Barba;
❏ Rolling the existing marquee player allowance into an increased salary cap;
❏ Clubs putting up a $10,000 bond to appeal salary cap rulings and a further $30,000 bond to take the issue to a hearing;
❏ Rolling the existing marquee player allowance into an increased salary cap, and,
❏ Extending the long-serving player allowance to include those who have played with a club for six years.
''We have taken a really extensive review of the salary cap and said 'let's make sure we look at everything','' Doyle said.
''We are still discussing it.''

Oh boy. I'll take Israel Folau for 3 million thanks, Mr. Trebek.

Long serving player allowance is a must. Fudge the Roosters, clubs should be able to have an advantage in keeping their favourite rookies they've brought into FG.

Cannot agree with this more!! I always felt sorry for the Storm actually. They did not buy in any big names outside of Crocker and perhaps Finch, everyone else was either trained up or were rejects from other clubs.

Just remove the salary cap.

It is utterly ridiculous that clubs, in effect get penalised for developing young talents into superstars .. The better these superstars get and the more money they command (and rightly so) the more these clubs have to carve up and compromise the rest of their roster to fit under the salary cap ...

Yep exactly. What incentive is there to develop your own talent? Just wait until the u20s and sign up the best young players there. How much money is thus saved on development coaches, training camps, talent scouts, etc. The NRL has been run by amateurs too long and from the evidence I've seen so far, at least it seems Dave Smith is trying to change that and at least have a sustainable business model in place.

that would be a lot of fun for us but pretty miserable for fans of most other clubs

Pretty much. We could have the entire Australian starting squad on current player values.

With no salary cap, it will be Broncos vs South Sydney every year. Crowe would have some pulling power with the amount of money he has..

Too boring.

**** the other teams. Start rewarding good business and stop rewarding mediocrity.

The NRL could ensure junior funding as well by discounting home grown talent. It would force the hand of clubs to pump more funds to their juniors.

The NRL has to be one of the strangest sports in that regard. Aside from the A-League, I cannot for the life of me think of any other league in the world that has a salary cap in place and makes team responsible for its own juniors.

much as I'd love to see the broncos drop kicking the shit out of everyone like they used to do, I also love the competitiveness of the NRL week to week.

Sure it's made all teams pretty homogeneous but the competition is incredibly close and defecates on the AFL in that respect.

That is a good point in that regard, but my point of view is, we have lost millions of players over the years including Hunt, Sailor, Tuqiri and Folau to other sports because we couldn't afford to keep them in the game. Well, we could have easily kept them but because teams like Cronulla and Manly can't throw around that kind of money due to poor business practices, then neither can we, and now we just came off a season where we finished 12th and those 2 teams both made the finals.
