NRL introduces post-conversion shot clock in 2018 to save playing time

February 21, 2018

THE NRL will introduce a new shot-clock — stopping times after conversions this year in a move designed to give fans more “ball in play” time and reduce delay in restarts.

Clubs were informed of the move via email on Wednesday morning. Referees will come call time off for 30 seconds after all conversion attempts. The shot clock had been used with success in relation to speeding up scrums and drop outs.

NRL general manager of elite competition Jason King said the move would result in three more minutes of time in play.

“At the moment, the time taken for players to return to the half way line to restart play is wasted time as far as the fans are concerned,” King said.

“The clock continues to run down (except in the last five minutes of play) but the fans see no football.

“We have decided to extend the shot clock concept to take time off for a set period of 30 seconds after each conversion attempt.

“An extra three minutes of actual play can have a big bearing on the outcome of a game.

“Over the course of the season, this move will give fans the equivalent of more than 720 minutes — or seven more games — of rugby league.”

This follows three other major directives for 2018 which include;

— Extra scrutiny on play the balls

— Referees to use the sin bin for foul play, particularly where a player is forced to leave the field through injury after an illegal act.

— Players will be allowed to strip the ball in a one on one situation — as long as there is only one player in the tackle at the point of the ball being stolen.

So in short, instead of calling time off in the final 5 minutes, time off will be called after every conversion.

But they don't mention if there are any penalties for teams deliberately wasting time.

The shot clock has 'successfully' been used? Really? Like when time-off is called before the clock goes so no one gets penalised?

Just make it time off every time the balls out of play
Easy solution. However it doesn't stop players ginning around for a minute or two to catch their breath.

Also think of the extra advertising therefore $$$$ that the nrl could make lol if they run another ad during those 15-20 seconds they'e resetting.

It has made teams take drop-outs and form a scrum faster, and generally within the 30 seconds allowed, so yes, it has definitely successfully been used. There are plenty of things to throw at the NRL, but this is not one of them IMO.

I'll call it now, Smith and Thurston will extend the minutes greatly while the clock is off.

Yeah, but what sproj says is still correct. The spinless pissants with the whistles still call time off for scrums, and I don't think anyone knows the method to when a whistle is blown.

The refs still pick and choose when to enforce the rules.

It has forced teams to take dropouts quicker and set scrums quicker, however a lot of those scrums still result in the shot clock being stopped rather than the team fucking around being penalized.

These guys are professional league players if they can’t set a scrum then penalty (differential maybe up to twice a match per team then non differential and bins). Injuries will always be an issue with gaming the clock but if can prove faking injuries (hard to do naturally but these guys aren’t all rocket scientists) then team gets huge fine say $100000 and player takes a month non paid holiday. Need to stop heading down the soccer s*** pathway.

With the HIA thing, I reckon any player who goes down with a head injury just shouldn't be allowed back on, this is one of the (many) things Melbourne used so successfully last season to avoid fatigue in their forwards.

Yeah, if they fail the HIA they can't.

I understand what you mean but there's no way this is a good idea.

Would like them not to treat cramp like an injury

They can't really do anything if the cramped player is on the field where the ball may end up receiving treatment from the medico.

Refs just need to harden the **** up and hold teams accountable. If they're cramped tell them to move, if they're wondering around like browns cows penalise them, If there's 30 penalties a game so be it, if there's sin bunnings for professional fouls so be it. It's about time disciplined teams got some benefit in the game.

NRL also needs to back their refs and stopping pandering to the commentators who harp back to the "good old days".

do they still have the time limit for taking conversions (including 2k fines if they didn't take the kick in time) or like everything else in the NRL, did that only last a season?

Never heard of that rule. Only that they have 1 minute and 20 seconds before time is called off.

They brought in in years ago (I can't remember exact year but was around the time of our last premiership.)

I remember there was a big thing about whether teams would care about paying a 2k fine if it meant the kick won them a premiership
