NRLW & General Women's Rugby League Discussion 2021-22

Jamie Lee Lewis added to the Broncos squad. She broke her leg last year but was having a good year before that. She's robust and will hurt some girls in defence.

Noticed she was part of the squad that traveled down there. Seems a a couple of teams have an extra squad player here or there.

Surprised there wasn’t an article about it purely because of who she is

Announcement today of expansion and salary cap changes for the NRLW

A further 2 teams to be added each year in the next two years, so 8 teams for 2023 and 10 in 2024.

2022 season will have a $350,000 salary cap instead of the current weighted points, with two players allowed to be employed ‘full-time’.

(Roosters $1.03 odds the first to start rorting this one too)

Private health for all players is now included

Origin payments increase from $4,000 to $6,000 and will be a 2 game series (why?) from next year. All Stars get a bump from $1600 to $3000.

Other investments are grassroots increases in junior pathways and academies, including for referees

Not sure if double expansion is the way to go here. I’d have expanded in either of those years once, but lengthened the comp to eventually be a proper home-and-away season in 2024. With 8 teams, you can have a full 4 month or so season, plus all the rep games and you can have players going for almost 6 months of the year

I’m also still concerned about talent depth. You can still see some quality issues, and too much expansion could result in teams having lower standards across the board.

Not sure if the ‘rising tide’ approach will work. Just because more players will play against the best, doesn’t mean they’ll rise to their levels.

But overall, I’m happy for the girls.

You can bet there’ll be another Brisbane team to try and dilute the Broncos.

Cows likely.

Romy and most of the Qld girls from up there will go back in a heartbeat. Even I can tell their hearts aren’t in it down in Newy

Also maybe they’ve realised that we still can’t be beaten with the points cap as we just keep getting touch and rugby girls who are worth the single point so now they’ll try and tie us up with a money cap

They only option for that is the Dolphins. They’re not going to have an independent girls’ team. You couldn’t financially do it- they’d need an NRL team and I think the Dolphins will be concentrating on other things.

Cowboys are keen and Stars have a strong line up.

I like all these announcements- it’s slowly removing the handbrake and heading towards independence and professional.

Looks like Millie's dress is trying to devour Shanae.

Elliston wins Titans POTY

Barely by one point over Brill. She’s was ok, nothing revelatory. moved from the edge to part of the prop rotation

Guess you only need 3 decent games in a 5(7) round season

Upton back this weekend.

Up at the Capras with Maddick I see. Storch has been carrying that team so far

Brill also at the Gold Stars … and Romy named at second row?! I suppose she’s not small by any means but a bit of change from fullback

Griffin at the Tigers, still no Ali

Burleigh almost unrecognisable as far as ‘names’ go but I suppose they can put all the Brisbane girls back in whenever they please?

I haven’t covered this year on here due to it running almost simultaneously with the NRLW and it finishing in just over a month again anyway.
