NEWS Oates: a bit surprised

Oh, good work on the your and you're thing👨‍🎓

I think he's having a good season, certainly a step up from 2019. Being relieved of the captaincy has done him a favour and he's one of the few doing a good job. He's a leader by example.

???

Yes, I know spelling and grammar has no correlation to intelligence however it does with other things. Like you allegedly know something is incorrect yet you keep making the same mistake repeatedly. That does tell you something about a person!! I don't feel superior, it's not a feeling as such but I do admire that trait of mine to handle correction, make the appropriate change and move forward. You on the other hand just plow on making the same lazy error.

A second point is you have absolutely no idea what my argument is! You haven't listened, you haven't absorbed a thing such is the certainty you have in your cockeyed process. You just ignore everything. You'd make a great soldier.

You could prove me wrong though. In just a few sentences, encapsulate my thoughts on Boyd.
Look you boorish buffoon, I have told you in the past I have dyslexia. It really comes out when I don't slow down and go over what I have written. I copped physical correction as a kid that didn't work, you think that writing in capitals and calling me lazy will fix it.

You admire yourself, sounds reasonable... for your ability to handle correction, wow. I am well aware of my shortcomings and I have put my hand up in this regard many times on this forum for it. I have a university education and have succeeded in my field despite them. This is a footy forum, not a university and I don't care what some bloke thinks about my writing skills as I am not going to go over my posts so as not to be corrected by you.

You say I have no idea what your argument is, I doubt you even really know anymore you have twisted it that much. It seems you think Boyd is being judged unfairly based on previous form. You think that he is playing well at center, mainly in defense. You used the stat that you say puts him at number two defender in the league. I disagree that he really is the second best for what I have already said. One stat alone proves nothing. I am not going stat hunting to prove you wrong. I did that long ago with just the observable. Boyd is not even close to being the second best at anything anymore and you claiming otherwise isn't going to change it.

Lovely. I mean I love the boorish buffoon comment 👌
I must apologize here because you do seem to have a handle on my position about Boyd as evidenced by the following quote. "It seems you think Boyd is being judged unfairly based on previous form. You think that he is playing well at center, mainly in defense".

Great stuff, nailed it. On the admiration thing I might correct you there. I admire that part of me that allows admitted failure without a loss of self esteem and further to that, I admire my readiness to change in the light of new information. I don't admire myself in a general sense. When I use uppercase it's for emphasis on the word as if it was the spoken word.

I apologize for the comments regarding the written word and I'm sorry you have had to deal with the scourge of dyslexia. My neighbour across the road suffered in precisely the same way yet attended university years after school finished and now is a engineering specialist dealing with fluids and gases. I'll not say another word and feel suitably ashamed and chastised.

Your stil rong tho 🤪

Alrighty, I’m going to try actually posting on here and not just lurking in the background, god help me.

Personally, I don't think Oates and Boyd really get along anymore at least when they’re playing together. The amount of times I saw Boyd set something up for Oates over the last few years to score a try only fumble it by being out of position or just drop it was infuriating. I also noticed that Boyd seemed to be constantly yelling at shit for brains. After a while that is got to be taxing for both of them. You either have a dude yelling at you all the time, or you play alongside someone that can’t seem to use the thing between his ears. I know people have also said oh Boyd doesn’t pass the ball to Oates so that’s why he’s terrible. Maybe Boyd doesn’t pass to Oates because he has one of two choices, run forward a couple of metres or pass it to Oates and take a gamble on whether he either drops the ball dead or manages to get pushed into touch. In a side that seems to have poor resilience to things not going our way I would also not pass to Oates.

People seem to want to see what Oates would be like with a decent centre beside him, I feel like it should be the other way around. I would like to see a decent winger beside Boyd and hopefully, provided Staggs is playing and Farnsworth is on the wing, I will get to see that this weekend. I do not rate Oates anymore; he had a few good years and for whatever reason has been out of form for the last two years (likely the injuries and weird infections). At this point I doubt he will ever be the same player he once was. He seems to be caught up with the player he used to be and lacks insight into the player that he currently is.

What I saw on the weekend was a left side that worked far better without Oates than with him in there. I will take a stance that is contrary to a lot of people on here in that I do not think having Boyd out there is a bad thing. The young guys like him and that is a good thing for this young side, even if we're not getting the wins at the moment. He is not the attacking weapon he used to be, but honestly with the team in its current state, he is a problem that is somewhere down the middle of the list to fix. If he is decent defensively and our problem is defence, I am failing to see why he should be booted off the island just yet. Sure, that stat does not paint a complete picture, but it still is a good stat.

I think they will go easy on you as they generally do for a first post. I'll take the heat for you though with your view that Boyd hasn't been going too badly this season. As you no doubt know I agree with that and said Boyd's about ninth on the list of things to worry about.

Don't know about the Oates Boyd relationship and hadn't considered it before. I'll have to study the body language more closely.

Welcome⚠️

Isn't this an Oates thread?

In relation to the discussion going on, I agree with @heartly87 (as I'm sure most would've guessed). Tackles & missed tackles are a reasonable gauge of if a player can hit and stick, but they're not the be-all and end-all in establishing if someone is a good defensive player.

As I've highlighted in a few threads over the last couple of weeks, if you're keeping an eye on Boyd during defensive sets when the opposition is close to the line, the argument that he's a 'good defensive player' completely falls apart. He rushes out when he shouldn't, completely compromising the left-side defense. There's been numerous occasions over the last month where his poor reads and poor decision making defensively have lead to us conceding a try.

Of course, the fans who don't know a great deal about the pivotal role that centre's play in orchestrating the decision making on the edges would only see the winger rushing in off his wing, or the five-eighth being left in no man's land, and blame them for the try being let in.
Yeah you can thank Huge for de-railing a thread with his boyd love.

Oates' time is up at Red Hill. If he doesn't want to do his hard runs out of our own end when times are tough then he can sign elsewhere.

Offensively Boyd offers zero in attack. Those tackle stats are not worth the lack of offensive power unless you want to include tackles inside the 20 and defending our line. I see him making plenty of decent tackles up the field, but defending our line we still get plenty of points put down on his side.

Fresh in everybody's mind is the most embarrasing defensive reel of 2019. So you'll have to forgive everyone for not recognizing Boyd as a defensive wizard.

No problem but 2019 is irrelevant. His present form is solid.

Unless we're going to market for a new centre next year, his form isn't solid enough not to blood someone else. Offensively his form is shit house, and his defense isn't good enough to stop us leaking tries from that side of the field anyway. Particulaly once it becomes more and more improbable to make the finals.

Benching Boyd won't solve our problems, but if we're interested in the future it's the right step.

A less smelly turd is still a turd....

He is definitely getting tarnished with the memories of 2019, but has he really been NRL standard since he blew out his hammy? I think not - not to a good NRL Standard anyway. This year he has improved, granted, but he still has made horrible defensive reads and been completely out of position many times - there are few missed tackles because he's not in position to even attempt them or he simply does the arms in the air trick.

Against the warriors he gave away at least two penalties for being inside the 10 when defending our line.

Offensively he's been an absolute joke, bombed a couple of easy tries and has set Oates up for how many tries this year? He can throw a hell of a hospital pass to him though.

When we get him, Macca and Kahu (and maybe Bird) off our books the first player I'd go all out for is Manu. Having Herbie play outside home would be a superb match and it would also fulfil Herbie's boyhood dream.

Pearls before swine here I tell you.

Would Boyd be picked in any other team? At centre, wing or fullback? I doubt it. Although, neither would Milford based on the last 6 rounds. He isn’t our biggest issue that’s true and he is playing much better than 2019. Better ball security, line speed and discipline from 1-17 are needed ASAP to save this season.
