Mums who go "I don't want my kid playing Rugby League because its too rough" need a smack upside the head.

A SPATE of footy violence that has seen two umpires attacked, three players banned for a total of eight seasons.

And a rise in assaults at the MCG has led to calls for a crackdown on louts.

Attacks on umpires and on-field brawls have increased this season, with district leagues fearing the game is being brought into disrepute.

Among the worst cases were:

TWO junior players being banned for the rest of the season after abusing umpires;

TWO rival players and the son of one being suspended for a total of 20 weeks after an on-field clash and;

A CLUB runner being banned from his league for 295 weeks after he hit a 16-year-old player.

You know if I said League was too rough to mum and dad, they would of whacked me. Friggen hell, I once covered in an under 12s game when I was 7. That is where you learn to give as good as you get.

I really do think parents wrap up their kids in cotton wool toot too much.

Agree Spud. Not just in terms of sport, but in protecting them from getting sick, getting dirty etc etc. Our bodies learn toughness by fighting off injury and illness.

That said, this sort of rubbish going on in junior AFL, and as has happened in junior league, is disgusting. No kid should be subjected to violence on a sporting field.
