Parker as Captain

He's been one the Broncos best this year but his record as captain is terrible.
He doesn't scream leader material to me.
Everytime he goes up to ref to question a call, seems to me the refs just doesn't respect him.
If Lockyer is out Thaiday should be captain.
Thaiday can lift the whole team with a good run, something that Parker lacks.
I'm not saying the poor results are due to Parker being the captain but with such a young team, Thaiday should've been the captain.
Yes, I know Thaiday hasn't been playing great lately, but who has?

Parker is the deserving captain.
His captaincy record does not mean a single thing. AT ALL.

Almost every time he captains we are lacking 4+ of our best players something which is a huge difference in such an even competition. If the team tried as much as Parker we wouldn't be in this situation.

I'm not against Thaiday being captain but I do not for a second believe Parker deserves to lose it. Parker is the ultimate professional on and off the field and a top club-man. A captains duties go far beyond just on-field play and Parker is definitely the most qualified overall for the role.

you have to remember that when Parker captains the club, it means that Locky is not there. and as we all know our record without Locky is not good at all.

Don't get me wrong, Parker is the perferct gentleman off the field and is a good clubman.
However, if the Broncos were 30 behind in their own in goal.
Who would you rather bark orders to the younger blokes in the team. Parker or Thaiday?
Who is the most likely to inspire them with a strong run or big hit? Parker or Thaiday?
Who would you rather go into battle with? Parker or Thaiday?
It's like in commentary tonight when they mentioned Tate is the player that everyone wants to play with in representative football.
Some players just have that aura about them and Thaiday has that.

He is clearly not the man for the job IMO.

Yeah. Captain needs to be a marquee player. So should be Wallace. [icon_lol1.

For mine, a captain is the team's leader. He talks to the troops, gees them up, organises them. He is lively, animated, energetic, enthusiastic and has a big mouth.

For mine, next to Locky, the only other man for the job is Thaiday.

Further, it would give Sammy the added responsibility I think he needs to lift his game, and I believe he would love it - which helps. Parker seems like he's about as lively as a block of wood.

Thaiday as captain worries me a bit only because he's one of those players the refs like to 'keep an eye on'. He's judged a lot more harshly than most other players. I think Parker deserves it and as others have said, his captaincy record has not been helped by Lockyer not being around.

I think it is entirely reasonable and likely that Sammy would change if given the responsibility of captaincy. Whatever he is, he is a passionate Bronco and would IMO, accept the honour of captaincy with relish and responsibility.

I think the change to his attitude would help both his game and the team. I think he can be a real leader.

If captaincy = leadership, unless Parker uses sign language or telepathy, I can't recall him yelling at his players to remove their fingers from their anus, get into position, or call the plays (which I doubt we have under Henhouse, and if we do, where are they?).

Parker is IMO a good back rower but he is neither a captain, and come to think of, no lock. That is Gillet's rightful place.

I don't think Thaiday is ready for the captaincy just yet. I think he will make a good captain one day, but not at the moment. As others have said, ATM he has a few things in his game that don't inspire a good relationship with the referees.

Parker is the best man for the job at the moment with Locky not there. Let's also remember that for much of his career pre and post captaincy Locky hasn't exactly been the most vocal of leaders. Even now you don't see him being very vocal on the field very often. Not all captains have to yell and scream at their players - in fact I hate captains to yell at their players (for mine Andrew Johns was a great player but one of the worst captains the game has seen because that is basically all he ever did was yell at his players).

You can't really call Johns a crap captain, he had a very good record of making crap sides play well and good sides play great under him. Sure he was a complete a-hole but he was able to get results and at the end of the day that's what captains need to be able to do.

A lot of players are able to make crap sides look good just by being in them - doesn't mean they should be captain. IMO He was mostly able to get results by his own sensational performances, not by inspiring those around him to play better. The way he used to berate and basically abuse his team-mates when things weren't going well was appalling as far as I am concerned. I don't think he was ever a team player and a captain needs to be a team player.

I reckon a sensational performance is inspiring to your team mates.

In any case, what counts for me is that a team has leaders on the field - a key player in the backs and forwards whose job (via good coaching) is to call the plays, organize the structures and keep things in shape. We don't have that. It's time we did.

A captain is the overall leader.

It's all about a properly structured and well defined organization - something totally lacking in this side, and has been since the days of Langer Walters and Webbie.

Aside from which, Parker will be captain this year for only 1 more game.

Nothing against Parker as captain, but if it's not him it should be Alex Glenn IMO. Thaiday, as has been mentioned, isn't the type you want as captain with the refs keeping in eye on him and his constant third man in on every scuffle.

I'd be wrapped to see Glenn as captain. Only problem is what position will he be playing in???

Yes that would be the issue. Obviously if he plays from the bench he can't be captain.

I think could make his home in the centres or at lock but he won't be getting either of those postions anytime soon IMO.

I have no doubt his best position is in the back row. But while we have Thaiday, Teo and Parker there, as well as Hodges and Inglis in the centres, he should be used off the bench where he was so effective in 2009. Put Gillett on the bench as well, with 2 good front rowers and that's a pretty good bench!!!
