PARRAMATTA boss Denis Fitzgerald claimed overpaid NRL players must take dramatic pay cuts to ensure all clubs survive.

Amid talk that New South Wales-based clubs, particularly South Sydney, are facing extinction, Fitzgerald said the NRL should reduce the salary cap from $4million back to $3.5million.

Fitzgerald said the cap should be decreased by $100,000 a season over five years to ensure reduced player payments and boosting each club's coffers.

Well can all Rep players pack ya bags in advance your moving to england.. future rep players leave now save time

Some People have no clue

He is a twit, has a crap opinion about everything. He is just worried his club will be squeezed out of Sydney in the shake up the game desperately needs. We need less teams and a higher cap as a result due to the inevitable higher crowds and higher general playing standards.

I think it's a great idea, but unfortunatly I don't think it's very realistic. It's so hard to take back what has already been given. Any decrease in the salary cap will directly increase the numbers of players lost to the ESL or Rugby Union. Atleast Fitzgerald is thinking about options, good for the Parramatta club.

This is just a classic case of being misquoted!

He didn't say "Cut the cap" he said "I have to cut the crap".

Talk about journalistic license!

The game makes more money now than it did 5 years ago so why go backwards. Clearly the problem lies with the saturated Sydney football market, Fitzgerald only has his own self interests at heart and the article couldn't be taken even remotely seriously.

What Fitzgerald clearly isn't seeing is that reducing the cap, means the stars get less dollars, which means England and Union suddenly look very very very attractive.

And another effect...fringe first graders get even less income, therefore up and coming players may look at the other codes or England early on. You might find players going to England as 18 and 19 year olds to make their name. Or worse, more of them turn to Aussie Rules, Rugby Union or Soccer while teenagers, because it's just not likely to make a living out of league.

Absolutely ridiculous thought.

Absolutely stupid idea. This would only lead to more of our most talented players buggering off to the ESL or Union. Clubs need to relocate so the game can expand and the salary cap needs to be raised once RL has found its feet in new areas.

This whole issue about clubs going broke, and Sydney clubs starting to dig their heels in (Richardson: Souths won't move unless members vote to; Fitzgerald: lower the cap)...it leaves such a bitter taste in my mouth!

The game had a golden opportunity to fix this in 1994 when News Limited first showed interest in the game and the ARL/Packer sent them packing, pardon the pun, only to piss them off and make them attempt the same thing in underhanded fashion.

15 years ago the game should have put in place real plans to sure the game up for its future. Instead there was ridiculous bickering, millions upon millions of dollars wasted, administrators, players and fans lost to the game and progress completely halted.

And now, here we are, facing the problems we could so easily have avoided all that time ago, and now the game has all these hurdles it has to cross very quickly or face real disaster.

The way things are setup now, we simply don't have the means to fix things or enforce mergers etc. We're in deep doodoo!

Maybe the NRL will need to approach somelike like News LTD then about doing the same thing.

My worry would be that News would say they've already thrown enough money away on league as it is.

Yeah I know. Maybe they will need to look overseas then. The USA would be a good place, they like throwing money at things to claim ownership.

This will spiral out of control before long and we'll be over run by afl and soccer.

Give Ipswish a team, Give Mackay One,Give Rocky One, Give Cairns one,Give the Sunny Coast one... Drop the NSW Teams Leave in NZ and Melbourne... QRL

And yet half of Sydney still blame the Broncos for their "selfishness" as a club. Mothing like looking toward the future [icon_shady

Yep. And while the NRL/ARL/NSWRL put their heads in the sand, and worry about the backlash of Sydney clubs and fans there will be no progress and no future.

Sure, you can't just alienate everybody, but you won't be able to fix the game's problems without upsetting someone.

Clubs relying on leagues club grants from poker machines is just a bigger buck version of smaller clubs that rely on selling doubles on match day and tickets in a meat tray raffle!

They simply don't run themselves as good businesses, and that will continue while you have idiot ex-footballers running the organisations.

Here here, the NRL should have rung up John O'Neill while he was out of a job at least then we would have had a leader who would willingly read the riot act and force clubs into making tough calls to save themselves and the games future. Gallop has sat on his hands whilst we got a crap TV deal compared to AFL and while his Sydney clubs "the games alleged heartland" bleed money, Gallop has to go and they need to bring in a business CEO who will look at the game and its clubs as business entities and make them into profitable parts by any means necessary.

recon mircosoft will buy the NRl :P

There you go agreeing with me again MB!

Agree about Gallop. He's a lawyer, plain and simple. He conducts himself in such a way that he reduces the likelihood of anyone suing the NRL.

If we're going to have a lawyer run the show, I VOTE DENNY CRANE! (not the BHQ poster, the REAL Denny Crane!) [icon_lol1.
