There has been plenty of discussion in the halves pairing thread but I'd like to get an actual read on who the members of BHQ would like to see get the gig.

I'd also like to hear why you came up with your choice.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I get the feeling that at this stage, this is going to be a blind poll for a lot of fans - hell, the fact I misspelled Zach's name (my bad) should be a dead give away.

I will say this, out of those options, I hope Barba isn't considered - his biggest strengths primarily involve the fullback role and it'd just stifle two positions.

So it leaves Kahu vs. Strasser and honestly, there isn't a whole lot to go on. Strasser showed some promising signs for the Dolphins, but he wasn't exactly killing it like DCE and it remains to be seen whether he can handle the rigors of first grade. On the other hand, Kahu showed good signs in first grade and looks like a decent link-man and has a decent running game which could compliment Hunt's style - however he hasn't played five eigth in years - is constantly struggling with injury and could be a big liability in defence.

I'm honestly hoping the Broncos can just pick up a serviceable player between now and the start of the season and put him there as a stop-gap.

It really is a blind poll. I understand Kahu seems to be the one in pole position for the spot at the moment, but without seeing both players in the position in a few games (at least the trials), I'll have to go with the one that was doing it regularly last season...

P.S. Edited Zach's name to the correct spelling... :takdir:

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I'm going with Kahu. I'm happy for him to get first crack and hopefully surprise us all, he's got talent sure but whether he's got playmaking skills is the big question, if he fails then Strasser will be the man to step up. I really wish Milford had been granted his release then this topic wouldn't be a concern :(

I know that we really need to do better than last season but does anyone actually think we're in with a chance to go top 4'ish?

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I just hope Kahu can stay injury free if given the spot. The kid deserves a spot in the team as he has shown a lot of potential the times he has played and if he can play 5/8 well than he should have it for round 1. But I think it will be decided after they have their preseason games. It's definitely a good selection headache to have, especially considering we apparently have zero 5/8 options.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

Lockyer, get him back. I'm serious.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

Strasser,

He is a fresh face in the team

No lingering injuries

A true playmaker, knows how to be aggresive in attack. He does look like DCE perhaps not as good but still promising. He will take on the defence line himself like the best playmakers do and he has great success for the Dolphins

A full season of defence is the QLD cup which is only 2nd to the NRL itself will be really helpful compared to the u20's playmaking hopefuls

This is his chance, we have had success picking out players from QLD cup (Reed and Gillett) and making a impact from the get go

Pretty much bang on with my thoughts Pete.

Both players have pros and cons. I'm happy to give Kahu first crack as a reward for his determination to keep playing footy with the club after the couple of horrible years he's had with injuries.

That said, if it looks as though he's not up to it

bring in Strasser.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I went with Kahu over Strasser purely because Kahu has more first grade experience.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

If Marmin's fit I wouldn't mind seeing him get half a trial at 6 with Ben at 1.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

Kahu but I'd be happy with Strasser as well, form in trials should be highly considered too.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I'd like to see ZS get first shot. From what I've seen from him ( not much ) he looks like he might benefit from a faster game.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I think Zach Strasser would be perfect partnering Hunt... From what I've seen of him, he is just what we need in attack... He likes to play late at the line, which creates holes in the opposition... He either plays short - across the face for a hole runner, plays it back - deep for his sweeping fullback, or uses his beautiful show and go - slicing through himself...

He really straightens the attack up, so we wont see the non-effective sideways movement from last year. He would probably have a simple, yet effective game plan, of just making the right decisions, picking the right pass or option. This would greatly take the pressure off Hunt.

However if need be, he can take on more responsibility as he finds his feet in first grade. He's got a solid passing, running and short kicking game, which will only further improve and develop based on game time.

His support play is probably another thing we have been lacking. He is constantly looming up in support, after putting his player through a gap, and he doesn't give up on the play. This would be valuable given Barba would probably make a fair few breaks from lurking around offloads from Parker or Gillett.

I went with Strasser because i want us to use a genuine half which he is and I don't think Kahu is.

Yeah, this. Also as much as I want Hunt to succeed, I think it's ridiculous to think he already has. So having Strasser (or Cullen?) will both let us have what is supposed to be a genuine half in the halves and also create some real competition for a halves spot for next year.

Re: [POLL] Five Eigth for 2014

I went with Kahu but not with confidence. I thought Capewell looked better than Strasser so I am not confident about him being up to the mark yet.
I also think Cullen could be better than Strasser
Basically I really have no idea and my vote in the poll is completely uninformed

I couldn't tell before they play in the trials but if I had to pick out of the 3 choices I would go with Strasser. Kahu can play on his day but he isn't a genuine fulltime five-eighth and hasn't played there very much while Strasser has always played there (as far as I know) and I like players playing in their best positions.

Whoever goes better in the trials will get the spot.

Strasser.

Griffin to take a risk and throw a young specialist half in the deep end and hope they end up like Sezer/Kelly.
