[h=1]He's Officially Back: Caleb Timu[/h]Broncos Media Dept
Mon 9th November, 03:44PM
CALEB Timu will return to the NRMA Insurance Broncos’ fold with a different outlook on life after completing a two-year Mormon Mission in the South Pacific.
Timu began pre-season training with a group of NYC Under 20s graduates this week after two years out of the game to honour his personal religious faith.
He was a very talented member of the Broncos’ Under 20s squads of Seasons 2012 and 2013, and represented the Queensland Under 20s in the back row.
But it will be a very different life to the one he has just lived over the past two years.
“I was based in Auckland in New Zealand, but part of our mission was the Cook Islands,” he said.
“I actually spent about seven and a half months in the Cook Islands doing things.
“It was a really good experience.
“We were teaching the gospel, out on our push bikes meeting people and talking to them in the streets, and just trying to help people.
“Basically it taught me the value of a person and that everyone has potential.”
Timu said the experience had also given him some focus as he prepares to have another crack at professional rugby league.
The rangy try-scoring second rower joins young players like Jai Arrow, Jayden Berrell and Keegan Hipgrave in the early group back at training.
“It (the mission) was actually one of the biggest drivers for me to come back and play footy again,” he said.
“I didn’t know when I finished if I would do that.
“But I am really excited now to come back and establish that passion again.
“With the opportunity I have been given, I just want to come back and give it my best shot.
“I know the club is an awesome place and I really enjoyed my time there before.”
Ipswich product Timu, now 21 years old, had attracted interest from rugby union but ultimately wanted to return to Red Hill and make up for lost time at the Broncos with his power game.
Timu became well known in 2012 after he scored two barnstorming tries to secure the Maroons’ Under 18 team victory over the young New South Wales side in a State Of Origin curtain-raiser where fellow Broncos Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima were Queensland’s halves pairing.
