The Queensland Bulls will charge towards the 2018-19 season with their JLT Sheffield Shield winning squad signing up for the coming summer.
Queensland Cricket today announced the Bulls contracted and rookie player list, with young fast bowlers Xavier Bartlett, 19, and Jack Prestwidge, 22, the new faces on the main list.
The duo has been upgraded from rookie deals last season to full contracts.
Queensland has added three first-timers to the its rookie list, with Australian Under-19 duo Nathan McSweeney and Blake Edwards joined by 2018 Cricket Australia Pathways Rookie inclusion Connor Sully.
Batting allrounder McSweeney was included this week in the 10-player National Performance Squad to work out of the Bupa National Cricket Centre in Brisbane this winter.
McSweeney, 19, scored 154 against PNG in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand where he played alongside fellow Queensland contracted players Max Bryant and Bartlett.
Wests fast bowler Blake Edwards was a member of the extended Australian squad that prepared for the World Cup, playing matches against the Pakistan Under-19 team prior to the tournament. He was also a strong performer for the Bulldogs in Premier Cricket, taking 31 wickets at 21.61 in his first full season in the top grade.
Sully, a right-arm pace bowler who has represented Queensland at Under-17 level, is the first player born in 2000 to be contracted by Queensland, with the Nudge College product turning 18 in October.
He played alongside McSweeney and Prestwidge in the Norths team that won the Queensland Premier Cricket title in March which each contributing significantly to the Vikings championship win. McSweeney hit 68 in a crucial partnership with century-maker Tom Healy while Prestwidge (4-45 and 4-88) and Sully (2-29) led the charge to bowl out Sandgate-Redcliffe twice to set up for the victory.
Queensland has three Cricket Australia contracted players in Usman Khawaja, Matthew Renshaw and Billy Stanlake and has awarded 18 State contracts and six Rookie deals.
Batsman Peter Forrest, who took up a coaching role with Hawkesbury in the NSW Premier Competition at the end of the 2017-18 season with Queensland, and allrounder Ben Cutting, who announced his retirement from first class cricket last month, were not contracted.
Forrest scored 2417 runs in 43 first games for Queensland, as well as representing Australia in limited overs cricket during his time with the Bulls. Cutting enjoyed an 11-year first class career with Queensland, playing in the 2011-12 Sheffield Shield winning squad.
Queensland Cricket Convener of Selectors Justin Sternes congratulated both players on their State careers.
“We thank them both for the mighty contribution they have made to Queensland Cricket and the Bulls over the years and wish them the best for the future,’’ he said.
“Ben is part of the Brisbane Heat squad so he will be around the group still and we’ll certainly be in contact closer to the start of the domestic season and the JLT One Day games,’’ Sternes said.
Redlands allrounder James Bazley and Ipswich-Logan allrounder Harry Wood were also not contracted with Sternes noting that both players remained of interest for selection.
Sternes said he expected Heat batsman Chris Lynn would also train with the squad closer to the start of the 2018-19 season.
“It’s important for us to have players like Ben and Chris working alongside the young members of the squad and ideally, they will be fit and available for selection for the Bulls for the one-day games,’’ he said.
“We were pleased to retain the bulk of the squad that helped Queensland win the Shield and it was very encouraging to see Jack Wildermuth, Mitch Swepson and Billy Stanlake included in the recent Australian limited overs squads for the winter tours to England and Zimbabwe, especially after having Joe Burns and Matthew Renshaw finish the season in the Test line-up,’’ he said.
The squad will resume training next month, with Bulls coaches Wade Seccombe and Andy Bichel both spending time recently in the United States visiting professional sporting teams as part of Cricket Australia’s High Performance Coaching program.
Seccombe said he was excited about his second season with the squad as head coach.
“We enjoyed some success last season but it’s encouraging to know there is more improvement to come,’’ he said.
“It’s a well-balanced squad with plenty of potential and we know there are some outstanding opportunities ahead. We’re all keen to work hard again and develop our skills further during the winter.”

The Queensland Bulls will deliver a distinctly Maroon flavour to the Australia 'A' touring squads to take on India in India in August.
Cricket Australia (CA) today announced two 14-player squads to play a one-day tri-series against India A and South Africa A in Vijayawada – with two matches against each opponent, plus a final – followed by two four-day matches against India A in Vizag.
There is a strong Queensland presence in the squads, with Queensland Bulls players Matthew Renshaw, Mitch Swepson, Marnus Labuschagne, Brendan Doggett, Billy Stanlake, Michael Neser, Jack Wildermuth and Usman Khawaja named for the tours.
Renshaw, Neser, Khawaja and Swepson have been named in both the one-day and four-day squads while Labuschagne, the 2016-17 Matador Cup player of the year, will play in the one-day line-up.
Doggett, who claimed five wickets in the JLT Sheffield Shield Final, will prepare for his ‘A’ series debut by touring the United Kingdom with the Australian Indigenous Men’s squad next month that will retrace the path of the historic pioneering 1868 Aboriginal tour of England.
South Australia’s Travis Head will captain the one-day team, while Western Australia’s Mitch Marsh will lead the four-day side. South Australia wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey will be vice-captain for both squads.

Selectors have chosen a wealth of players with international experience in at least one format for Australia, with just six players – Queensland’s Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Jack Wildermuth, Brendan Doggett and Mitch Swepson, plus New South Wales’ Kurtis Patterson – yet to play for Australia.
Neser, Swepson and Wildermuth will all have the chance to be capped for Australia on the upcoming tour of England (ODI & T20) and Zimbabwe (T20).
National Selector Trevor Hohns said:
“We’re really pleased with the squads we have assembled for this tour,” Hohns said.
“We’ve got a couple of really experienced international cricketers, a large group who have had a taste of playing for Australia already, and some emerging players who have performed strongly and we believe have the potential to one day play for their country.
“It’s an extremely important tour, as we look for players who can adapt and find ways to excel in sub-continent conditions.
“With Australia’s series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates fast approaching, it’s a chance for some players to push for selection for that series, and for all players to gain experience in sub-continent conditions.”
Speaking on the appointment of captains Travis Head and Mitch Marsh, and vice-captain Alex Carey, Hohns said:
“We’re looking for leaders for future Australian teams, and Travis, Mitch and Alex are all very impressive young men,” Hohns said.
“Travis and Mitch both have captaincy experience at state level, and this is an exciting opportunity for them to lead a new group of players in different conditions.
“Alex, as our Twenty20 vice-captain in the UK and Zimbabwe, is also someone we rate very highly as a leader, and this is another opportunity for him to develop those skills.”
Only two players selected have yet to feature in either an Australia or Australia A squad – emerging Indigenous fast bowler Brendan Doggett and batsman Marnus Labuschagne, both from Queensland.
“Marnus and Brendan both came through the National Performance Squad program last year, and performed strongly for Queensland last summer.
"Brendan is an exciting fast bowler with genuine pace, who has impressed with his wicket-taking ability in the Sheffield Shield. Marnus has put together some really good performances with the bat over the past 12 months, particularly at one-day level.”

Ness cap # 225 for Australia.

Chris Lynn is set to pull on a Queensland shirt in the domestic one-day competition for the first time in five years after the Bulls handed a last-minute playing contract to the six-hitting sensation.

In a boost for his bid to win a spot in Australia's one-day international squad for next year's World Cup, Lynn has been handed a Queensland deal with a view to him featuring in September's JLT One-Day Cup.

His addition to the squad comes in unusual circumstances, with Queensland Cricket announcing Monday allrounder Jason Floros has given up his own playing contract as he focuses on completing tertiary studies.
Floros' decision to relinquish his deal means Lynn, who had not held a national or state contract since the end of the 2016-17 season, has been added to the Bulls playing squad for the coming summer.

The 28-year-old Lynn is set to depart this week for Guyana where he's playing in the Carribbean Premier League with the likes of fellow Australians Steve Smith, David Warner and Ben Cutting also featuring in the T20 league.

"It's been a few years since I have been a part of the group for the limited overs competition so I'm looking forward to getting involved and hopefully help us to play some good cricket,'' Lynn said.

"I've enjoyed training with the boys in the off-season and am keen to get into the playing side of things again, first with the Knight Riders in the CPL and then the JLT Cup,'' he said.
In a blow for the Bulls, Jimmy Peirson, their Sheffield Shield-winning captain from last season, will miss the JLT Cup as he undergoes hamstring surgery.

Lynn has not played a 50-over match for the Bulls since the final of the 2013 domestic one-day competition, but Australia have shown a strong willingness to get him involved in their 50-over side in recent times.

The right-hander was named in Australia's Champions Trophy squad in the United Kingdom last year, while his most recent List A match was his ODI debut against Pakistan at the Gabba in January 2017.

Australia's Test squad: Tim Paine (c), Ashton Agar, Brendan Doggett, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Jon Holland, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc.

Few shocks there.

Cannot understand J Richardson not getting a shot, the kid is a gun.

Also, is J Pattinson’s career done?

Chris Lynn (c), Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant, Joe Burns, Luke Feldman, Sam Heazlett, Charlie Hemphrey, Lachlan Pfeffer, Jack Prestwidge, Billy Stanlake, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Sam Truloff, Jack Wildermuth.

Can't believe Lynn is back playing One Day cricket and captain. It's a biblical miracle. Hasn't played since the 2013 One Day Final.

Nice blend of youth- Pfeff will have to keep with Peirson out injured.

Bryant I am keen to see bat again. He was great last summer.

This will be Lynn's 30th game for Bulls in one day cricket- never scored a 100. Funnily enough Roy never did either from 85 games.

Two of the most dynamic bats ever for Bulls and not a 100 between them.

Remember when I said I was hopeful of Lynn playing Domestic cricket for the Bulls again and you said it was no chance of happening because there's too much money in T20 and he wouldn't risk getting injured again 1910? :P

Decent Bulls team, little light on the batting with Khawaja, Labuschagne, Peirson & Neser missing, should be one of the better bowling squads though.

1. Burns
2. Bryant
3. Lynn (c)
4. Heazlett
5. Hemphrey
6. Wildermuth
7. Pfeffer (wk)
8. Feldman
9. Steketee
10. Swepson
11. Stanlake

Is that the XI you'd expect @1910? Or could Truloff, Bartlett or Prestwidge sneak in to the top XI?

Well clearly hope works, he was no chance but I think his big pay day last year has made him more willing to play for the Bulls. Before the IPL last year he wasn't even walking to the shops in case he fell over.

Prestwidge is fast and can hit a ball, he could get a go down the order and cause some damage, wouldn't even bother with Swepson.

Bulls team is as I predicted except with Bartlett in for Feldman.

Victoria currently 4-76, Maxwell & Maddinson at the crease.

Bulls started well then lost all momentum, Swepson was poor but then came back at the end and 240 is a pretty good total for the Bulls. Queensland looked good when they bowled short, and it was climbing. The ball that got White was brutal.

2/13 not a great reply.

Bryant- starting to hit them and hitting well 15 off 11. He's so daring just seen his captain go for a duck and doesn't retreat at all. His problem is he has no slow down button.

Swepson getting it done at the moment
