Queensland - can't have a grand final and could lose a state of origin

For all the positive things he's done for the NRL there are times when David Gallop just doesn't seem to "get it" - here's another one:

Unless massively underselling the games television rights last time around resulting in us being way behind the AFL financially for the last 5 years is considered a positive.

Why should one of our premier games be shown outside of Australia. NFL wouldn't take its grand final to Hawaii...

I think it's fine to keep it in NSW and QLD. If you absolutely must take it elsewhere then take it to a place where expansion is a real possibility. We're not going to expand in NZ anytime soon.

On grand finals I agree with Rocky, if you host the grand final stadium here you deprive 30,000+ fans of seeing the games showpiece which isn't good for the game.

Well, they would if Honolulu put in a bid that was better than all the others. They were talking about bidding for the 2016 SB, but I don't know what happened with that.
I'd be perfectly happy if Australian cities were to bid for Origin 1 each year. It's being played in Melbourne next year; why not Perth in 2013, Adelaide 2014... any city that has a big enough stadium and is willing to promote the game. NSW and QLD still get a game each, and the best display of rugby league on the planet is opened up to new markets.

If cities are going to be bidding on one origin game per year and it would be financially good for the game(really good money) then I'm all for it.

It would also even it out if there one home game for each side and one neutral game. But seriously not NZ, keep it in Australia.

There are no direct quotes from Gallop mentioning NZ at all in that article. I assume that he's referring to the success of the Melbourne Origin matches, and wants to use it to push the game into other cities too.

I still strongly prefer it to remain in QLD/NSW but if there's serious money to be made which could be shared amongst the games elite player(SOO players) that would help them stay in the game then it has its benefits.

I have no idea what a city would pay for an origin game but if they paid 250k that could mean an extra 7.5k for each player over the series.

Disagree with taking it to New Zealand. Rugby League has got a good niche over there. It will never surpass Union so I don't really see the point.

Perth though is a real potential market which the game needs to explore. It should get a 60k stadium in the next ten years and when that happens I think there's real merit in taking a game there.
