Raiders juniors blocked by NSWRL

Canberra's most talented young rugby league players have been banned from competing in the NSWRL's junior representative competitions after the Raiders failed to enter a team in the NSW Cup in 2011.

Canberra's SG Ball (under-18) and Harold Matthews (under-16) sides have been left high and dry by the decision, with the NSWRL getting tough after years of watching the Raiders filter players not in their NRL game-day squad back into the Queensland Cup competition.

The Raiders, along with Manly, have both had associations with Queensland Cup sides for a number of years, with the cost of maintaining a NSW Cup the main reason behind the move.

But having become sick of helping develop players only to see them boost the Queensland Cup competition, the NSWRL issued an ultimatum to both Canberra and the Sea Eagles to join the NSW Cup or risk having their junior programs blocked.

Part that has me wondering is at the end of this article

The new rules could also have a direct impact on the Raiders' depth in 2011, with players given dual registration with both Canberra and Souths Logan to be blocked from returning to the Raiders after June 30.

Anyone able to explain what effect this has?

You know I had heard rumblings during the season that this would happen.

Stupid bloody NSWRL - just admit you run an inferior competition already. This kind of decision impacts the juniors and will see more kids turn away from RL as they don't see a pathway for themselves.

From what I understand of that last quote - seems to mean that if players are dual registered for Canberra and Souths Logan and they haven't played a majority of their games for Canberra prior to June 30 then they will be ineligible to be called up into the Canberra team for the remainder of the year. Crazy crazy stuff if that is tru

F**king petty.

Then again this comes from the organisation that banned Folau from being a water boy.

Geeze NSWRL are a bunch of wankers. This does nothing but weaken their own competition even more.

On the last part of the article. What rights does NSWRL have in regards to letting players play in the NRL? Or is it just based on playing in the NSW cup, but seeing as Canberra don't have a team they would be straight into first grade.

I don't see how the NSWRL can stop Canberra from selecting a player who has been dual registered. The NRL is run by the NRL.

If they do try and stop them, it's a ready made court case - talk about restraint of trade!

The dual rego stuff would go over their heads surely! The NRL or ARL needs to step in and tell the NSWRL to wake up to themselves.

Isn't NSWRL going to be history once the independent commission is up?

No, my understanding is that the QRL and NSWRL still exist and will continue to run their respective state league.

what the QRL should now do is allow the Raiders juniors to play in the QLD junior comps, meaning that any of their guns will be eligible to play for QLD in the state of origin [icon_evillaugh

Yep. Let them play Mal Meninga Cup and Cyril Connell Cup up here.

By that time the IC will be up and running so if they are truely there to do whats best fo the game, then they will allow duel registered QLD Cup players to play for the Raiders after that date and there wont be a thing that NSWRL can do to stop it since they don't actually run rugby league in Australia (although they like to believe they do)

As I understand it, this is an option they are looking at. However don't know how many of these kids' parents would want them relocating to Brisbane at such a young age - what I fear will happen is they'll go to another sport instead.
