NEWS Reece Walsh credits old Origin foe Michael Maguire for change in mindset

Reece Walsh credits new coach Michael Maguire for key advice that, if applied, should put and end to the "rocks-or-diamonds" quality he has displayed in his short career.

The 22-year-old Brisbane fullback grinned when asked what it was like to be "coached by a guy that put a target on your head in Origin".

Either side of that question Walsh waxed lyrical about the new Broncos coach and why he could take him to another level.

Maguire was at the helm of New South Wales this year when Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii famously took Queensland fullback Walsh out with a high shot in the opening State of Origin match.

Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters and others at the club were of the opinion that it was not an accident.

Walsh answered the question on Maguire and alluded to the fact that the coach understood his strengths and weaknesses better than most after plotting against him.

"I think narrowing the gap between my best game and my worst, that's a big thing that's sticking out in my head," Walsh said.

"Consistency is a big thing I'm chasing. Madge (Maguire) is big on turning up here each day, putting your best foot forward and having a red hot crack, and I think that's something I want to build in my game.

"You look at players like Payne [Haas], where every single game he's turning up and every single training session he's turning up. That's a big thing for me."

Walsh said his discussions with Maguire had not been idle chat. The Broncos finished 12th in 2024 and getting Walsh firing will be vital if they are to finish top four.

"There have been some really good, honest conversations. They are the conversations you want to have to get better," Walsh said.

"It is about me growing as a person and a player.

"I want to be that player that everyone wants to play with. Madge is driving that.

"I have got so much growth in me and that is what is exciting.

"I feel like the position I play … it's time for myself to start taking on more of a leader role.

I've got so much more to learn and it's good having Madge and all the senior boys there I can lean on for advice."

Walsh signed an extension through until the end of 2029 days after Maguire started his tenure.

His extension had been a hot topic for months before he signed.

"It was a long time coming," he said.

"Now it is all done I don't have to think about anything besides working hard and building a really strong culture. I am just happy that it is done now.

"I play rugby league to win and I believe we are building a strong work ethic here. We are pushing each other to be better."

Walsh will not have his close friend and number six Ezra Mam beside him in the early rounds of 2025. Mam was charged with drug driving after a head-on collision in which three people in the other vehicle were injured. The NRL is expected to hand down a lengthy suspension.

"He's obviously got things he's dealing with and has to get through," Walsh said.

"He's an awesome person and we love having him around the club. It's going to be a little bit weird without him for a little bit but I know when he gets back in here he's going to have the mindset to work really hard and get himself back up."

Let's start with the culture building involving no white powder and Bali Benders.

Also would prefer no nail polish and sunnies.. but I'm a grumpy guy I know.

Not aimed at you but more the general rugby league public that are generally angered by his nail polish, but all these guys who have daughters do they just flat out deny them when asked to do their nails and such?

I’ve got a 6 year old girl and I’ve constantly got make up on or nail polish cause she wants to do it. Couldn’t imagine saying “no i’m too much of a man for that” to her.

Well to take the other side of this matter. Not the issue at all. I've done that myself and think it's cool.

It's wearing the uniform when you front up for work, used to be tougher standards around that. So.. you remove the sunnies and nail polish before entering the work place.

Like I said.. I'm grumpy and this is kind of a small battle when you are trying to deal with members of your workplace injuring the general public.

I like the guy and wish him well! I hope the rot ends with Mam and his driving, haven't been reading much about the Storm and Panthers players getting in trouble this off season?

Nothing better than Cobbo leading a pack of Rabbitohs chasers on his way to the try line, or Walsh cutting through a backline.. great to watch.

Yep I'm angrier at the media.

They would be aware by now why Reece's nails are painted, but they dont report that.

Why??? because it gets more clicks from Sydney broncos haters if they're left in the dark... and Sydney fans aren't going to bother checking the reasoning for themselves, because they prefer to join the circle jerk and bash on a bronco.

It's the hypocrisy of the media... pretending to care and promote mental health, but then actively reporting such that a young guy looking after his daughter has his social media filled with comments bashing him for it.

Asu Kepaoa just got charged with doing 150kph in a 110 zone unlicensed... and also Taylan May earlier in the year being charged for DV... on top of doing 90kph in a school zone. Tyrone May and all his sex assault charges, etc.

Who knows what storm get up to down in Melbourne no one knows who they are down there... Munster and Cheese getting caught on video with the 'white substance' is only because they were stupid enough for it to spread to social media.

League players are dumb asses... we just see Broncos because they're under the SEQ media microscope and then it gets extra attention because there's more Broncos haters than fans so it gets clicks and engagement... doesnt mean idiots down south arent doing similar

Haha.. yep ok I didn't know about those incidents.

How about the Dolphins? They seem to be behaving well.

Sure....but you wash it off before you go to work

yeah?

I don't - makes them happy to see me wear it, and I don't care enough about what other randoms think about some nail polosh.

Where does it end......? What if little Janey wants to do lipstick and eye shadow next....? Do you go to work wearing it as well as your nail polish?

I understand the want to indulge your daughter.....as a father of a daughter ....who wouldn't?
But as I say......where does it end......

and as a parent, am I afraid to install some boundaries with my kids. Am I afraid to say no......?

It ends where you want it to end. But that should be determined by yourself (and what makes you happy), not by what others may think.

I completly understand some people may feel insecure wearing nail polish or a funny hair style, etc. out in public (even if its done by your kid), but that's not my problem (and in this case not Reece's).

It isn't harming anyone - it's like some people being upset when they see someone with tattoos.
