Moments of individual brilliance in between long periods of really, really average play.
Everything we did tonight lacked intensity and hunger and again we made way too many errors - especially in our own half. We’re lucky Parra had so many big outs because they were physically dominating most of that match. Carrigan looks burnt out from this start to the season and I’d be giving him a week off.
Last year when we were rolling, we were riding those freakish individual plays on the back of space and time created by our pack dominating.. this year we are getting hammed in the middle and just hoping Walsh and Mam can create some magic for points. Probably half the reason Walsh is trying so desperately to create something… but has so much less opportunity to do so. We need to focus on building that foundation and go-forward first… if we were playing someone good tonight we would have been beaten convincingly.
Happy with the result, but not impressed by the performance.
Valuable win, but I am very concerned by how tired we look. It's been a tough start to the year, and Kev needs to start some resting rotations going into Origin, starting with Patty. Haas can carry us up front for a week while he rests.
Poor performance. We were second best and overpowered for a lot of the game, but we dug in and came out with the win. My favourite win of the season tbh. I love these fighting performances where you just battle and scrap and get the result.
Mention for Carrigan. He's been immense all year. Looked really tired for a lot of the game, but still managed another 70+ mins again. Incredible really he managed so long tonight.
We’re still a very young side. 6x 21 year olds out there tonight. We did some horrendous things but importantly we found a way to win. The ref was putrid I thought. The eels really aimed especially their forwards. We will keep growing and maturing over the next few months. It’ll be frustrating at times but I reckon we’ve just gotta enjoy the ride and trust in Kevvie and the boys.
Not nearly as bad as I think some here were making out. Absorbed some bruising defense in that first half and converted on mistakes from a Parra team that was asking questions. Made some mistakes themselves in the pouring rain, but mostly defended them well. Kicked ahead in the second half and held the lead well. Also played most of the game with sixteen men.
Would have cracked sixty if Fletch had played, I reckon.
Strange old game. Never felt like we got into a rhythm at all. In saying that, we kinda kept them scoreless in the second half. Their only points coming from a derp play on the first kick return.
Walsh was more patient tonight but you can see his natural instinct is to score a try every play. His passing game is a long way off, can’t remember the last time he put away our centre or winger. He should be looking for offloads in the middle more.
