Round 12 - end of the crackdown

None of the stuff we've seen the last two weeks has been enforced this week.

So much for vlandy's hot air of it continuing.
Correct, the rules have definitely changed again... Vlando has just decided he’s not going to tell the world this time around

Vlandys had to go into full blown damage control.

The backlash was worse than anything ive seen in Rugby League and i am certain that the NRL have been inundated with complaints and threats of fans abandoning the game since magic round.
Followed closely by the proposed removal of the national anthem from rep games. (another Vlandys pearler).
It doesn't matter how much Vlandys and Abdo double down on their stance, when the ratings start plummeting and you have the threat of record low crowds at the State of Origin, the blokes in charge start back flipping at record speed.

This is what happens when you have people who dont understand the game, making calls on the basic structures of the game due to fear of litigation.
You end up with knee jerk rule changes that are detrimental to the game, and when you have past and present legends of the game refusing to shill for Vlandys, people stand up and take notice.

Special shoutout to Gus Gould, Joey Johns, Gordon Tallis and Brent Finch who throughout all of this refused to be patsies to the gestapo tactics Vlandys and his cronies have tried to enforce.

On the same note, Yvonny, Cronk, Vossy, Brandy and Ennis can all get fucked and it will take a long time to wipe Vlandys shit from their noses.

The worst thing about this, is the Broncos and the Knights copped the full brunt of these stupid changes with zero reimbursement.
If anything, the points from the first night of magic round should be redacted from the winning teams and all teams involved should get 1 point for that face of a round.

Hold the phone - Sutton is reffing like it's magic round.

Did he get the message?

Hopefully someone calls him out for it, want to see him try and talk his way out of this haha.

The billion dollar class action for brain injuries in the American NFL set a precedent .
I don`t think the ARL could afford the bill if every player with a brain injury sued .

Because there are many thousands of people with CTE from rugba league .

The crack down was to be used as a defense in the inevitable class action coming .
No win . no pay lawyers will make sure of that .

Volenti non fit injuria

So it seems the bunker and MRC have had a list of origin players which they have been slowly crossing out with Vlandys' new rules...they must have gotten a fright with how many they've already rubbed out for Tariq Sims' knee to poor Jacob Liddle's head to go completely unremarked.

So much for serious about protecting players' heads. That was a dog shot under ANY interpretation of the rules and he should be seeing a month on the sidelines.

Does it work?
Not really. The NRL, clubs, coaches, refs, physios etc owe the players a duty of care. You can’t require an employee to injure themselves.

As new information on long term effects of head injuries come to light, the governing body needs to act accordingly to protect its employees from unreasonable harm.

Boxing has even more to worry about.

"Unreasonable". It is not unreasonable to expect that choosing to play a contact sport might cause accidental high contact with the head. At what point do the courts tell them to piss off?

Let’s just say “you knew what you were getting yourself into” isn’t a cut and dried defence.

Are players "employees" though, or are they self-employed contractors? WHS laws are different for each. I'm only familiar with construction where the Principal Contractor is ultimately responsible (though everyone has a duty of care to themselves and each other too) - I wonder how the law applies to a situation like the NRL.

They've clearly gotten advice that they need to "do more" to prevent head knocks, but at some point there is a residual risk. You will NEVER eliminate head injuries in rugby league. Similarly in construction, there are always residual risks and shit can always happen no matter how much work goes into risk assessment and control.

Harder to nail down the employer in Boxing .
They are one off promotions with independant contractors . ARL players are full time employees .

I listened to an interview with a neurologist on the ABC one saturday morning . This guy was involved with the AFL . He said after a few years expect to have brain injuries . And a 10 year career would leave a person disabled . And liable to have mental illness or early onset Alzheimer's .

It`s just a matter of time before the class action .

They aint volunteers .
They have a contract . Are employed . That defence didnt stop the class action by the NFL players in the USA ...

Not brain scanning concussed players . Allowing concussed players to continue playing . Pressuring players to come back after concussion .

The head bin is relatively new . There is a 100 year history of Rugba League before they realised OH Shit we gonna get sued !
