Round 16 - Broncos vs Rabbitohs - Post Match Discussion

I liked the last 20 minutes from the Broncos and thats about it.

Dodds didn't get on the field, kinda sick of that happening. Particularly when players like Gillett are playing prop.

We really didn't let Souths get in the game which was great. Aside from Teo's shocker the defense was good.

Those uniforms looked like the Hog's Breath Cafe ones (pink/maroon) that the cheerleaders used to wear.

Pretty solid game all round. Given it was 3 v 4 it keeps us towards the front of the pack which is the main thing.

Taylor had a shocker, so if QLD were actually considering dropping him, this game wouldn't have helped him. Gillett was pretty good, but again is just being used as a lock/prop and it's taking away his offloads and second phase play. Parker was the best of the 3, hopefully QLD pick him again.

If Gillett and Taylor make the Qld team and Parker doesn't, I'll be convinced Mal doesn't actually watch games.

p.s. Petero's attempted goal kick was better than Lockyer's last year....

Josh McGuire has played himself into the origin team for me, should take Taylor's place on the bench and play as the impact forward. I'm sure he could slot into second row at some point in the origin game. Parker obviously should be in for Gillett. With regards to the game, it was not too bad, our attack is a bit of a problem though. I like our defence very much, but we need to work on our attack bigtime.

The problem with the attack is that Norman and Hoffman seem to be playing for themselves more than their outside men. Like Hoffman never really looks to create space for Reed, he usually just steps on the inside and goes himself, wasting the play and another tackle while we straighten up again. That's probably the biggest flaw of his game, he needs to look to create opportunities for his outside men when he gets the ball as 2nd/3rd receiver.

That was a great win, I'll take it. Souths' defence was really good but the Broncos dominated possession and territory. With a defence like Souths tonight they'd win most games but we made them tackle and tackle and denied them opportunities. A good game plan well executed (well, apart from the intercept) I say.

Dave Taylor - please drop him Qld...

Our attack really has gone to shit. Should have won by 50. Defense was good and Macca is dumb dumb dumb

Funny thing is it couldn't have been any worse than Parkers attempts against Manly.

You had to remind us.

I had finally blocked his goal kicking from my memory & now it's back.

Not that bad actually I reckon, Souths just tackled really well. But Locky would have carved them up, we probably do really miss him at times.

Very important two points for us, of we manage to roll the Sharks next week we a nearly a lock for the top 4.

Disappointing attack again, too much down that middle 3rd. Reed needs to get more ball, he is being wasted.

Gus was his sickening self raving about Souths defence, what about our D ? ! try from an intercept and 1 from a bad error by Teo. Apart from the Everingham break they never looked likely.

Not our best effort but I appreciated the attitude we showed tonight. As the 9 commentators pointed out, I thought the positive mind-set of Hannant really summed the side up. Despite having a demoralising 90m intercept try put on us, Ben seemed really unphased and had this air of confidence the class sides do.

For the majority, we played the better territory game and didn't offer Souths many piggybacks out of their own end. On the other hand, Souths discipline really came into question and they took some bad options at times. To their credit, the Rabbitohs defended well and there were plenty sets on their line where the Broncos didn't trouble their formation at all. They should definitely hold their heads up high in that regard.

Back to the Broncos, there's obviously a lot to work on still. I'm not too concerned at this stage, but am hopeful to see the boys play their best footy at the right end of the season, as they did last year. For that to happen, I believe our attack needs better formation & we need Wallace & Norman to know the play before the play the ball. I'm getting really frustrated watching Wallace or Norman trotting around like headless chooks and taking the tackle. I believe this side has a lot of points in them and we're only going at about 70% of where we should be.

Forwards were 'good' without being great. I thought Civoniceiva made a big difference in his 300th. His runs through the middle are like gold and it really helped us when he was on. McGuire was a deserving MotM, forgot how many times I thought, gee he should be playing Origin ahead of Taylor & Gillett. Parker was in similar company. Te'o had a mixed bag, but I don't mind that from a benchy. Some of his hits and runs were set changers & gave the boys momentum.

Still have plenty of question marks on how we use and how we play the pack but I'm fine with showing some patience in it until the post-Origin season. If we see Gillett play prop against Manly I'm going to lose my s**t.

Might as well rap the backs too. Strong game from most of them, although the positioning at time annoyed me. Hoffman was bloody gutsy, he's going to be a sore man this weekend! Copley continues to provide us with plenty of value from dummy half. Reed had his best game in a long time, some of his defensive plays were fantastic and it was great to see him show GI the sideline like that. That's the Reed we all know and love! Hodgey was one of our best, even though his stuttery dummy half runs give me the s**ts at time.

TL;DR - Not our best performance but we showed a good amount of patience against a resolute South Sydney defensive line.

Though the result didn't go our way. I am happy with the effort of our boys. Tackle count was 394 - 269 so to make an extra 125 tackles and not counting that last try (as it came when we knew it was over) we were only down by 10. Take away that stupid strip penalty and the try that came from the next set, the score drops down again.

You can't defend a freaky try like Norman's, just magically how the ball just seemed to float into his hands.

In attack we couldn't mount anything as we were never allowed and spent most of the game coming out from our own half and didn't get any favourable penalties to help us when under pressure. How can you guys blame Te'o for missing the tackle? It was a great step by McQueen on both Te'o and Hoffman.

We will learn from this game and if we can defend like that and get our attack right, I will be more than happy. Souths of old would have let in an extra 3 tries with the amount of pressure on our goal line. We are starting to build into team that plays like a top 8 side.
