Milford, Nikorima, Ofahengaue star as Broncos thrash Titans

July 8, 2018

Much-maligned Broncos halves Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima put in one of their most dominant joint performances of the season to sink Gold Coast's faint finals hope with a 34-0 victory in the southern Queensland derby at Cbus Super Stadium.

The pair had a field day as the Broncos dominated from the outset and had the error-riddled Titans on the back foot continually.

The Maroons cast-offs terrorized the Titans defence in a clash that was missing State of Origin players but still had plenty of class on show.

The Titans are now eight points behind eighth-placed Brisbane, with a -105 for-and-against. Canberra and Wests Tigers are the only remaining threats to the top eight.

Brisbane were far too classy, with lock Joe Ofahengaue also outstanding, against a Titans side that made too many errors, were penalised heavily early and had halfback Ash Taylor unable have any great influence on the game.

The future Maroons forward ran for 184m and made 34 tackles in a dominant display.

Their last two visits to Cbus Super Stadium has reaped 88 points to the Titans' zero.

It took the visitors less than three minutes to get on the scoreboard through brilliant youngster Nikorima.

The plan by the Broncos forwards was to bait Titans' forward and former Brisbane under-20s player Keegan Hipgrave who was involved with minor dust-ups with Sam Thaiday and Matthew Lodge.

After a penalty against Hipgrave, the Broncos went into Titans' territory and Staggs, who began at right centre, stood up Dale Copley with a right foot step and found Nikorima backing up on the inside.

A penalty goal in the ninth minute by Jamayne Isaako made it 8-0 and the score reflected Brisbane's early dominance.

Kevin Proctor was denied the chance to put Gold Coast in the game when a pass from Ash Taylor that put him on the way to the try-line was ruled forwards in a 50-50 call.

Soon after, the Broncos gained possession from a strange decision where Henry Perenara ruled a "bobble" in a play the ball by Ryan James, and Staggs was in for a four-pointer of his own. Milford called the ball right and Ofahengaue fed Staggs, who finished well.

In the 31st minute, off yet another penalty to Brisbane in the ruck (Proctor for leg pulling), Darius Boyd scored their third try of the half for a 20-0 half-time lead.

It took almost 20 minutes of the second half for the Broncos to post their fourth try, after two Isaako penalty goals, when Joe Ofahengaue scored too easily through a gap on the right edge – against after a penalty and error in possession by the Titans gifted them possession. That made it 30-0.

Brisbane's left winger Jonus Pearson picked up his first NRL try in the 75th minute, and celebrated accordingly, as the Titans' misery continued.

Easy 2 points, bit hard to analyse. Good to Sammy denting the line instead of his runs at the markers crap

Thaiday is gonna balloon out massively when he retires.

Great win. Played as well as we were allowed to, but we had to defend about 4 or 5 sets in a row almost and didn't concede when being 20 up they could've been forgiven for doing so.

Wonderful games from Staggs, Pearson, Turpin and Fifetus.

Good win. We got a little careless on a few breaks in the second half, pushing passes instead of taking the tackle, etc. That aside, great team performance.

Great work rate from the pack and the backs had us going forward all night. Attitude and aggression in defence spot on.

A little concerned for Isaako. If he's got a groin issue that impedes his goal kicking (or playing) that will be a blow.

Lovely end to the weekend.

Disappointing not to get to at least 40 but after a performance as good as that, you can't exactly complain. Awesome stuff, especially from the youngsters who made the "Baby Broncos" look like world beaters.

Also after that shit, I never wanna hear another peep out of the Ash Taylor fanclub. That was one of the worst halves performances of the year for any team.

He's an ex half so he's creative four try assists this year- kicks out of dummy half- His long and short kicking game is strong. Four line drop outs this year in his five games and kicked long for 409m.

Minutes are up after coming back via the bench. Minus last week which was only 18 minutes. He's a great defender bit like Mick Ryan has good technique.

Might have Ryan covered, great tackling on debut he was terrific.

Staggs. Deserved a standing ovation when he went off.

The good thing about the media hating us is our wins are always downplayed. Was a big factor why we finished 3rd last year, according to the media we were attrocious and our wins were all flukes.... yet we finished 3rd.. weird that...

The whole team played well - felt like watching the '15 team play. If a few things were improved, we win that game 50 nil. Incredibly satisfying win, been waiting all season for this one.

I think we were really solid. Wish we could have put more on them tbh, thats the sort of game you would have seen Melbourne put 50 on them. Good performances from everyone though.

Easily our best performance all season.

Very happy with the boys attitude and energy tonight.

Consistency is the key now. We must back it up against a Warriors team who will be up for it after their massive loss.

Ofa and Lodge killed it again. TPJ started slow, but came alive in the last quarter of the game. Solid work by ALL the other forwards.

Turpin seems pretty good. Hopefully Wayne keeps him around to put pressure on McCullough...maybe even replace him sometime.

Staggs is a talent for sure. Seems better than Kahu already to me, has really impressed every time he's had the ball.

Milford and Kodi were good again, the forward pack dominating really takes away a lot of the pressure from organising the side, they can play more free flowing games.

Pearson has impressed. Isaako is ICEMAN with the boot. Even Boyd had a good one.

Great performance, was impressed with Turpin, nice to have a reliable back-up 9 just in case.

Ofahengaue & Lodge were immense, Kodi, Milford & Boyd were all great. Plenty of other good players as well.

Our halves were very good tonight. Also nice to see Lodge get some well earned praise in commentary (fox).
