I don't think mistakes are as big a problem as the continuing change of interpretation of the rules. Is it just me, or does the 10 metre offside stretch to 15 m and then sometimes shrink to 8. We see a crackdown of the play-the-ball...except when they decide not to. Gould made a point about the sport not being synchronised swimming during the broncos-tigers game. Its also not Jazz either. Some consistency would allow less overrall penalties and give the players a chance to perform at their best and not have to second-guess the singular tendencies of individual refs. I know there's a effort to do so, but with the constant expectation to be 100% right, they seem to going into the start of a crackdown with good intentions and back off as the media looks to find an excuse to demand their sacking. No one game should decide who referees. If a mistake happens so be it. I know that is hard to go along with, particularly when the broncos are robbed sometimes. But when a single mistake decides selection it teaches caution, not accuracy. Referees should be scored openly on their performances from game to game. Sure it might lead to a sacking, but the referee should be able to at least see where he is going wrong and how. Grades should be broken down by things like 10 metres, accuracy, foul play etc. with scores adjusted for such. This very likely happens already, but its the closed-door nature of it that frustrates the fans. Open the door and let us see this. Maybe we will agree, maybe not, but atleast it would give insight and understanding. Those are the two things (along with consistent endeavour) that lead being good at anything.
