Cowboys have been cleared.

Thurston breaks silence on the NRL betting scandal

The NRL betting scandal has taken a dramatic twist after the Cowboys were yesterday cleared by NSW police of any wrongdoing in a purported betting plunge last year.

The development came as North Queensland captain Johnathan Thurston broke his silence on the betting allegations, insisting he had no involvement in the affair that has led to the arrest of Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy for giving false and misleading evidence to police.

I can't believe anyone would think Thurston were involved to begin with.

Good result for the NRL.

I hope there are no further arrests. I don't necessarily think it takes two to tango in this sort of scandal either.

I don't think so either. Tandy was gambling on the fact the Cowboys would take the 2 points. They don't necessarily have to be in on it.

IMO gambling on the fact the cows would take 2 points was an extreme risk. End of season game - in a game that doesn't matter? 2 pts? I don't know... [eusa_naugh

Yeah but being a punter he probably was willing to take that risk.

Interesting that Tandy has appeared in Court today and pled Not Guilty at the same time as two others have also been arrested. A 48 year old and a 49 year old. I think there's a lot more to come out of this story yet.

Wow! If Sam Ayoub goes down for this it's going to have MASSIVE implications on player manager scrutiny.

That's a good thing IMO!

Police have arrested NRL player manager Sam Ayoub and former first-grade player John Elias in relation to the alleged NRL betting scandal.

Detectives also executed a search warrant at business premises on Hay Street in Leichhardt, in Sydney's inner west.

Thursday's arrests relate to an NRL match between the Canterbury-Bankstown and the North Queensland Cowboys in August 2010.

Both Ayoub and Elias have denied any involvement in the alleged betting scandal.

Earlier on Thursday, Canterbury-Bankstown prop Ryan Tandy pleaded not guilty to a charge of providing false evidence about the alleged scam.

NSW Police Force were expected to announce their findings at a press conference at Police Headquarters at 1 Charles Street, Parramatta from 1pm (EDT) on Thursday.

"Casino and Racing Investigation Unit detectives have today arrested two men and laid additional charges against another in court, following investigations into betting allegations," a police statement revealed.

"A 48-year-old man was arrested by police about 9.45am at a home in Punchbowl before being taken to Bankstown Police Station. Charges are expected to be laid.

"About 11am today, a 49-year-old man was arrested by police after he went to Campsie Police Station. Charges are expected to be laid."
