Here are some of the considerations the ARLC are thinking about for the salary cap:

  • The NRL centrally contracting marquee players in a system similar to cricket and rugby union
  • Having just one salary cap for all of a club's teams with NRL, National Youth Competition and State Cup to all come under the one umbrella
  • Providing a sliding scale for loyalty payments, which grants concessions the longer a player remains with the one club;
  • Allowing players to shift clubs at any time, in spite of contractual ties, if clubs can agree terms;
  • Implementing a salary cap that includes a limit on off-field spending on resources such as coaches or high-performance units.

NRL salary cap review: free movement for players a priority

some good ideas there, but that last one says to me that they would rather keep rugby league in Australia as an amateurish sport, rather than allow clubs to grow and become more professional because a few clubs can't keep up

OMG going fucking backwards with this shit.

the first and last don't sound appealing. But the others look like good ideas if they get implemented properly

Make it happen!

Would also like to see that the sliding scale of concessions isn't limited. (that is it's not like the current system where the discount just comes out of another, limited, pool of money)

In the actual interview, they state that these are all only ideas being looked into, and it's based on other sports. Nothing is definite.

I like all the ideas except the last.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts here, why do you think the first idea isn't appealing?

Anything that takes control away from the clubs is bad IMO.

  • Allowing players to shift clubs at any time, in spite of contractual ties, if clubs can agree terms;

This sounds like it could get a bit messy !

I can't see the players agreeing to that, surely?

So If I'm reading that right, does it mean players can be transferred without their consent if clubs agree? What would be the point of that ?

No junior concessions is the biggest disappointment from that list, but I guess that would penalise the Roosters and we can't have that.

Would be very open to abuse, imagine a week out of the finals Slater goes down, Parra no chance of making it so the Storm offers to buy Hayne for the finals in a back room deal just to be transferred back to Parra for round 1 the next year

Hayne would get to retire with a premiership, lucky bloke.

most likely it would be like European soccer ..

for example...

Broncos offer Bulldogs 300k transfer fee for Barba
Bulldogs agree, Broncos permitted to negotiate with Barba
Barba still has the right to reject the Broncos offer and play out his existing Bulldogs contract

with this point: "Allowing players to shift clubs at any time, in spite of contractual ties, if clubs can agree terms"

There is really nothing stopping clubs doing this now. we saw that with the Barba situation. i'm pretty sure there is no rule preventing a club from talking to a rival and negotiating a fee to sign one of there players (assuming the player in question agrees)

I think that means even after the June 30 deadline.
