Salary cap thought

Well i had a thought.

I am sick of hearing our best players and $1m in the same sentence. So i have been trying to think how to get around this.
Pay them $1m a season with the current salary cap? NO.

I see only 1 solution.
Salary cap exempt Marquee player.
1 player from each team will have 50% of their salary exempt from the salary cap. in addition, should this player be a local junior from the club and has player for a minimum of 7 years then they get a further 50% reduction bringing this players salary cap cost to the team at only 25%.
Once a player like Inglis, Lockyer, Buderus, SBW, C.Smith, Gasnier, Menzies & Hunt has played for 7 years, they could possibly be on as high as $2m a season. outrageous i know but if this is what it is going to take to keep them then i am all for it.

So now the problem.
Struggling clubs like the Sharks, Newcastle, Rabbits etc will not be able to afford the players. I say bad luck.
This is now a game of business and not a charity. I am sorry but if you can not afford to play in our game then you should not be here. Currently the salary cap is holding back 12 or so clubs because a tiny handfull are running out of money. I would love to see all our clubs succeed but when there are currently 9 teams based in Sydney and the current economic situation, they simply will not survive. It is just a matter of time until clubs start folding.

I for one would rather see a 12 team comp and have the likes of the players i have mentioned, than see a 16 team comp all containing players that are yet to reach superstar status. And once they do, they leave.

Allowing each club to have only 1 marquee player will still even out the talent whilst stopping a few clubs from buying everyone. With the further 50% reduction for local Juniors, this will give players an added incentive to stick with their club. K. Hunt for instance is what 22? He was offered $400K a season for 4 years. He would be 26 when he is off contract next and what would he want then? $600K $700K? With the current salary cap, there is no way the Broncos would ever afford his next contract.

What are all your thoughts? Granted some of the figures mentioned would need to be tweeked a bit but with the NRL doing nothing, someone has to.

I like the idea, but I think the big issue is the cap contribution of club juniors. The way I see it, if club juniors get some kind of salary cap exemption, it would free up cap space for the struggling clubs to still be able to sign marquee players.

I think your idea PL is a very good one, but I think they would go for an option that is fair all across the board and I think it has to start with the juniors.

Drop the cap. Simple. It will help the clubs retain players, and will get rid of the shit clubs.

Correction, I think you mean;

/Competitive Rugby League.

No salary cap gives us ridiculous competitions similar to the pathetic Premier League in England.

92-93 Man U
93-94 Man U
94-95 Blackburn
95-96 Man U
96-97 Man U
97-98 Arsenal
98-99 Man U
99-00 Man U
00-01 Man U
01-02 Arsenal
02-03 Man U
03-04 Arsenal
04-05 Chelsea
05-06 Chelsea
06-07 Man U
07-08 Man U
08-09 Man U

No salary cap is clearly not the answer to a good competition.

It is if you swap Man U with Broncos!

If no cap Broncos will win every year, seriously even if there was a cap but it exempted local juniors than we would every year too!

The EPL is the most successful competition in the world. The NRL could do a lot worse.

That aside, I think there is something to be said for the best team winning, and to see great teams achieve great things together. Theoretically NSW should win every Origin series due to their superior resources, yet what we have at the moment is a great QLD team. Also, with Soccer, you can buy players rather than waiting til they are off-contract, which is a big reason why teams like Chelsea, United and Liverpool are able to keep at the top. This wouldn't be the case in the NRL.

The big ESL clubs have financial backing from billionaires. Won't happen in Australian sport IMO.

See the argument that an even competition and sharing the winners around makes a good competition is laughable. The result is we have 16 mediocre teams, some are just less mediocre than others. No team in this competition would get within 20 of the 1998 Broncos, or the 1996 Manly or the 1990 Raiders teams.

Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters are the best teams of the last decade simply for the fact they each made the GF 3 times in a row. If the Storm can make it 4 in a row that's going to be utterly remarkable.

What you get with the EPL is the opportunity to watch the best of the best play against the best of the best. Yes, it also means you get to see the best of the best humiliate the worst of the best, but so what? That's still exciting to see the best players let loose and show their talents.

The NRL is so even these days that few teams can afford to take any risks early in the game because you simply can't afford to get too far behind or you get destroyed. Plus most teams have a few genuine stars. As soon as they're injured their team becomes so poor it's not worth watching.

All due respect to the under 20s, but I as a casual fan wouldn't pay money to go watch Ben Hunt and Dale Copley play. I'd want to see Darren Lockyer and Justin Hodges.

I for one would love to see the NRL a 10 team competition with the best of the best players. Have a lower tier comp where the ones that miss out can play against eachother etc, a genuine reserve grade.

It'll never happen for $s, but I'd rather see that than a 16 team competition where at least 6 of the teams are just plain shit.
