I think we should bring back the reserve grade comp before NRL matches. at the moment there is a too bigger gape between the u20's and the NRL, it would also allow graduates of the u20 comp a good place to mature their skills after they are no longer eligible for toyota cup. it may be the death of the QLD and NSW cups though. every team would then have an interest in developing players as well.

Personally i would like to see 3 games on matchdays

u20's followed by national reserve grade followed by NRL

I would like to see a return of reserve grade but I think we should keep u20s. There just seems too much a gap between the twenties and too grade atm

the big problem with the 20's is forwards take longer to develop than backs. they are usually well into their 20's before they play to their potential. guys like Webcke and Civoniceva hadn't even debuted by the time they were 20.

Introduce Reserves heavy (premium) and Reserves light...up to 90 kilo ...lights.....over 90 kilos ..heavy. That way everyone gets a game and older players keep going for longer. Debut at 24 or 25 instead of leaving the game early. The lighter players can stay in the game until their bodies harden up enough to play in the heavier grade. Takes care of both younger players who are not quite ready (and gives a better gradient) and older players who are in the heavier grade. Lighter players could play in the heavier grade but not vice versa. Really do need an intermediate level of some description.

I assume your light/heavy thing is more for forwards? Coz many NRL top quality backs are 90kg or under.

That idea is retarded. 15 year old props are weighing 110kg these days. You would have a team of wingers and a team of normal sized players.

Reserve grade and U20's team in a national Comp is just too cost prohibitive.

Can someone explain to me why the NSW Cup is so poor in comparison to the QLD Cup?

You are right. A fair few clubs stopped fielding a NSW Cup team to save the money to spend on their U20's and First Grade teams.

I would really like to see an improved Reserve grade comp. Really for those fringe first graders or those U20's players who ran out of time before they got their break. Some do get lucky and get picked up playing NSW Cup, Bunderburg Red Cup and QLD Cup, but many just fade away.

I think the NSW cup has dropped off most NSW fans radar, since the NYC comp was formed. People used to support the 3 teams (flegg, prem and first grade) and now only follow the 2 (NYC and first grade).

With most feeder team games being played on the same day as their first grade team somewhere else in the state, fans can't support these like they could if they were played before NYC at the same stadium as first grade.

As I don't really see much of the QLD cup, I can't really comment on it. The support is probably the QLD fans holding onto the loyal QLD grass roots comp. Where NSW fans are loyal to their grass roots team, which is usually the first grade team

Hope that made sense.

Ditch the Under 20s and have a Reserve Grade comp, maybe put some restriction like 50% of the players need to be under 21 or something. I don't know, but there needs to be a decent second tier comp.

The NYC is just absolute, utter rubbish.

What was the original idea behind NYC? What were they looking to achieve?

From memory...concern with kids going straight from inferior local comps to NRL...boys against men. Playing u20s would give them experience against comparable kids...and delay their nrl blooding.

The opposite has happened.

Hey jester. I have no beef with you having a different take on things but it's hardly enough to call me(by extension) retarded. Fine if you don't agree but , gee ease up a bit. It was only an idea, no worse or better than some others suggested.

Yeha fair play mate sorry, I just typed what was in my head, didn't mean to offend or nothin.

Sweet. Just on what you said though I think if you consider it a little more slowly [icon_wink it could be imagined as having in the lower weight division (perhaps tied to age ??) a couple of 110kilo props and second rowers who play in the lower division based on their age. If able they go up to the heavier weights or if the coach considers them still too green they stay back. In the heavier division you'd find the blokes who are ready or almost ready to step up the following year. With some older guys marking time in this division(a real reserve grade replacement) it could be a stepping stone to firsts. Basically breaking reserve grade into two distinct divisions with weight and age a determinate in the lowest division. So not just a team of wingers ,lol.
