CRONULLA has exposed how to shut down Anthony Milford, treat him like Johnathan Thurston and bash him for 80 minutes.

The Sharks targeted the brilliant Milford relentlessly and it paid dividends with the five-eighth making key errors late in a thrilling clash of premiership heavyweights.

Cronulla are the first team to truly take Milford out of a game this year and he appeared concussed at one stage.

To his credit Milford fought to break the game apart right to the very end but his performance was below his usual standard as the Sharks won 30-28 in Cronulla.

Milford wasn’t alone though.

Ben Hunt and Sam Thaiday also made crucial errors while the Broncos pack was out muscled in the opening half.

Coach Wayne Bennett put it bluntly when he said his side just “didn’t turn up”.

The vampire-like Broncos shone when the sun went down but their first half deficit of 28-6 was too big to overcome.

With every tackle made on Milford, Sharks players threw knees, legs, arms and elbows into him.

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said they wanted to test his physicality.

“He got a few bumps and bruises when we ran at him,” Flanagan said of Milford.

“He’s a quality player. Sitting here doing our preview we knew what sort of player he was and credit to the team they defended him very well.

“He will bounce back.”

Brisbane’s halves combined for four errors, one line break and one try assist against Cronulla.

Milford had one last chance to win the game for Brisbane but his kick found Ben Barba on the full as he was pressured again.

Thurston has been bashed for years and has learned how to use it to his advantage.

It is a process Bennett said Milford would fight through.

“He’s going to have to get used to it,” Bennett said.

“He will come through this period he is in.

“That’s just a reception to how good you are.

“If he wasn’t that good they wouldn’t worry about him.”

Bennett said he was content with his team’s start to the season.

“We saved some face and got some confidence back in the second half. We have tough games coming up but we are in pretty good shape,” he said.

“To be in this competition and be seven and two you can’t complain about that.”

Milford has been Brisbane’s best this season but the Broncos’ most important players are Adam Blair and Andrew McCullough.

The glue to the Broncos middle defence was missing on Sunday, through Blair’s suspension and McCullough’s injury.

Cronulla proved they were genuine premiership contenders as Harold Holt poked his head above the waves.

These two teams will meet deep in the finals series.

The Sharks’ win was a pivotal point in the premiership which now has three genuine contenders in Brisbane, Cronulla and North Queensland.

Haha milf played bad. He got a few shocking passes. Watch him carve them up when we play next

Lol bash him for 80 mins didn't we score 22 points in the second half. Who writes this shit?

So basically employ grub/ thug tactics straight out of the nsw origin handbook. I suppose they do have the absolute bottom of the barrel in that respect (Gallen, Fifita, Ennis).

We always have one weird game against the Sharks every year, yesterday was it. Next time round if we have our first choice 17, the result will be a slaughter.

every playmaker has a quiet game every now and again
what the sharks should find scary is that even with milford and hunt quiet, we almost rolled them in the second half. look out when they are on

Wow , ground breaking template. Run your forwards at the playmakers.

Let's try that again. Yes, ground breaking coaching by Flanagan there.

Mitch, plus hopefully have Blair and Macca back shoring up the middle will make a huge difference as well. Two things we have to actively improve on are:-

1. Our defensive structure/response where teams try the hot potato unload game plan. We need to be able to shut down the off-loads. It cost us against Penrith and the same yesterday.

2. I don't mean to harp on it, but something seriously needs to be done about Hunt's form and the decision making of both of our halves under pressure. In big games when the crunch is on they seem to quite regularly take the wrong option.

Bit harsh on hunt there mate. He was trying to get something moving late in the game on that last tackle & we were going absolutely no where in attack that set (we made like 14 metres that set on our line) The last play kick was all Milford which was a terrible kick. Hunts form over the past month has been pretty solid

Yes it has but it wasn't yesterday. Hunt is not, as someone observed elsewhere, "a young player" and he ought to have stepped up but then, as others have observed rightly or wrongly, Hunt is not an organiser. So who organises our attack? Milford? We saw yesterday what happens when one puts all one's eggs in Milford's basket, and Milford will, as everyone acknowledges now, be a target more and more every game we play.

So, is Macca our only other option to organise our attack? If he is then we are in deep trouble ... unless .... well, who will help Milford organise an attack under serious defensive pressure?

Organising attack under pressure when your halves are off should come back to the fullback shouldn't it?

Alf organises our attack
So are we blaming alf for the loss yesterday?

He wasn't exactly on song yesterday either.

Pretty much.......

3 of the 4 usual spine members had an off day.

The 4th wasn't on the field.

=

We'll never be as good as the Cowboys and we're only making up the numbers in the premiership race.

I can tell that Milford is the sort of player that will learn from the game yesterday and continue to evolve and learn to use the fact he is being targeted to his advantage.

As much as i love milford, one thing that annoys me is when he stays down after the tackle and has a whinge trying to get a penalty. All it does is ruin our momentum
