QRL Chairman Bruce Hatcher wants Townsville to host an Origin game as early as 2020 and has urged the NRL to make Townsville the fifth city to host an Origin after the new 25,000 seat stadium is built.

Should Townsville host an Origin game?

25000 seat stadium is pathetic for an origin. They sell out in QLD and get 70k+ in Sydney. Atleast in Melbourne they also get those sort of numbers too. 50k seater is a minimum for a showcase event like origin.

pretty much this.

Living in townsville I'd be fucking stoked. It wouldn't cost me 2 grand+ to get to a game.

But yeah.. 25k people is pretty sad for an origin.

The Question I have is dies Townsville need a second stadium.

Granted I haven't been to dairy farmers (or whatever it is called now) in years.

It seems more like an effort from the inept QLD government to try and buy some votes

Yeah, I think they do need a new state of the art stadium.

When you go to the likes of CBUS, Suncorp, AAMI etc and then go to the Cowboys stadium, in comparison it's like going down to the local footy oval.

A lot of people love it, but they need a new stadium. It's just not good enough for this comp.

It's pretty ordinary. And in a fkn terrible location. where the stadium currently is, is almost as West as you can get before you're on the highway out to Harvey's range. Where they are moving it to is much closer to the city and the waterfront.

Townsville doesn't have the public transport like Brisbane to ferry people in an out of games. Granted they run some shuttles but more times than not its more of a hassle to catch one then to drive there, Park about 1km away and just walk. That's something they can address with the new stadium as well by including more parking.

My biggest problem with the new stadium is that it's already a 25k stadium or there abouts. And they are going to replace it with another 25k stadium, but with different colour seats?

I guess the answer to that is with Thurston retiring in a year or 2 they won't need anymore seats than that.

Yes, but not in no 25k stadium that's for sure.

A bit off topic but I'm currently doing the electrical construction on the new Perth stadium.
It is scheduled to hold a SOO game here in 2019.

Considering half of Suncorp is filled with suits at Origin time, I'd be happy with a 25k crowd if they're all rabid Qld fans.

A stadium full of passionate locals giving the blues and the refs heaps from metres away is way better than some pickled corporates trying to chat up the hosties and taking selfies.

Jon Tuxsworth just made a good point on ABC radio ...

Townsville should be trying to get a test match up there, they have a similar size stadium to Canberra (Where Friday's test will be played).

That's a more realistic option, they have no chance of getting an Origin unless the government kick in to help make up the financial shortfall due to a stadium half the size of Lang Park.

Townsville has had an Aus. V nz test before back in 2012

There's already a stadium in this state that hosts origin games, it's in the capital city (real Queensland) and the stadium is called Suncorp Stadium and it's fucking glorious.

They deserve it more than Melbourne, Perth or Sydney, but get a bigger stadium first. Then I'd be all for it. The noise could be massive.
