Stat Attack: Key numbers point to NRLW grand final upset
September 28, 2018
Are these the statistics that prove a Sydney Roosters upset is on the cards in Sunday's NRL Holden Women's Premiership Grand Final?
The NRLW has delivered some unpredictable results over the past three weeks but Brisbane have dominated to go into the inaugural decider as clear grand final favourites, a tag the Roosters held before the start of the campaign and one which they are happy to have given up.
The Broncos' ability to cross the line is clear after scoring 76 points in three 60-minute games, more than double that of their rivals.
Their biggest advantage areas are in line breaks, where they've broken the line on 19 occasions compared to the Roosters' 10. In Chelsea Baker Brisbane also have the leading goal-kicker in the competition, while the Tricolours have only kicked one goal in three games.
However the Roosters are ahead for most of the other key areas according to NRL.com stats.
The Roosters have had more possession, totalling 416 carries compared to Brisbane's 380, despite scoring just 34 points in three weeks.
The teams are almost level in terms of total run metres (Brisbane lead 3448-3439) but the Roosters have a 137-metre edge in terms of post-contact metres.
They also total 61 runs out of dummy half totalling 531 metres, almost double compared to the Broncos' 32 carries for 300 metres. The Roosters dominate tackle breaks as well, 126-114.
There is a similar trend in defence with the Roosters recording better averages in missed tackles compared to the Broncos (38.7 a game to 45) for an 83.1% tackle efficiency rate.
Another interesting point is Brisbane's scoring periods. They've scored 10 of their 14 tries between the 15th and 45th minute of games, but none in the final eight minutes of their three games.
In comparison the Roosters have crossed the line twice in the 57th minute of games.
It should be noted the Broncos' bench impact is their biggest strength with Ngatokotoru Arakua averaging 122.3 metres in the middle period of matches.
