Remember the try Tuqiri scored about 10 years ago when the ball cannoned off Tate's melon past the defenders and into the in-goal? Pretty sure it was either a Langer or Lockyer bullet pass into his head. It was deemed unintentional and not played at, so the try was allowed. I think it might've been against Northern Eagles when Tuqiri got the points record for the Broncos.
yep, there have been lots like that over the years, and they are rightly ruled play on. despite what BHQ likes to think, anything other than the ball coming from your hands and going directly forwards towards the opposition goal line is not a knock on. head is not hands, neither is chest. intentionally heading the ball forward has now been made illegal, but unintentional is fine.
Unless the player was making an attempt to catch the ball with their hands. In the Tuqiri case it was so quickly into Tate's head he had no chance to even think about getting his hands near it.
But a situation where you're attempting to catch a ball and it goes through your hands, missing them completely, hits your chest and goes forward is still ruled a knock on. HOWEVER, it would be interesting in a case like that if it got referred to the video referee, because they would have to look at it by the letter of the law, which ignores common sense, and they probably would rule that a try in that case.
The law of common sense, and the whole point of the knock on rule would dictate that that's (the ball missing hands and hitting chest but player was attempting to catch it) a knock on.
Imo it should have been classed as a knock on. Hits his arm while attempting to catch it, even if it is due to a deflection from his chest. Though I am expecting the "it didn't touch his hands" arguement, so play on and the try was the correct call.
Thats the game where gasnier scored a try , blues had the game wonI seem to recall an Origin try that was awarded to the Blues from that situation down at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne a few years ago.
I think it was the 3rd game in our first of the 7 series win - the game where the Blues choked at the end and Lockyer picked up the loose pass 20m from the tryline and ran through for the match winner.
Edit: found it! http://youtu.be/8EwUavS48K8?t=5m38s (p.s. Qld fans should continue watching til the end)
Edit 2: just realized that ball clearly hits Hodgson's arm, not just his chest yet the try is still given - a bit like the Inglis one in Origin this year.
