Watch the match highlights again and your heart begins to beat faster in your chest, even though you know full well what's coming.

It's been almost seven years since Greg Inglis scored in the south-east corner of Suncorp Stadium in the final minute of the Broncos v Storm semi-final and broke Brisbane hearts in what at the time would be Wayne Bennett's last game in charge.

The ice-cool temperament of Darren Lockyer shattered in an instant as he first raised his two hands to his head in disbelief before crumbling to his knees and smashing the turf with his fist.

He agreed to do a post-match interview with Channel Nine but all he could muster was, "I don't think I've ever felt like that."

It is a match full of pain for Broncos players but also one of mixed emotions for Storm fans who had to see their team humiliated in the grand final due to the two-game suspension handed down to captain Cameron Smith in the wake of their 16-14 win in Brisbane.

When the Broncos and Storm met in June it was just two points that separated them again and there is every chance Thursday night's rematch won't be their last meeting in 2015.

After squeaking past the Broncos in 2008 the Storm easily accounted for the Sharks in the preliminary final before running into a rampant Manly team in the decider, their place in the grand final one Sam Thaiday believes should have belonged to Brisbane.

"We'd done all the hard work to win the game," Thaiday recalls, who had to leave the field late in the contest with an ankle injury.

"You wait for little moments in a season and you kind of know that you're going to be in a grand final or win a grand final. In 2006 we played the Bulldogs and that was the game, that was the turning point. We knew we weren't going to lose the grand final after that game because we showed such grit and determination to come back from 20-6 at half-time.

"We showed grit and determination then and we had a belief that we could still win and we took that into the grand final and there was no way Melbourne was going to beat us that year.

"In 2008 we'd done all the hard work to get into a grand final, we just had to hold the ball and get through it.

"There are so many highs and lows in what we do as rugby league players and sitting back now, it's been almost 10 years since we've been in a grand final. It's a long time in between drinks and it just shows how hard it actually is to get into a grand final to begin with, let alone win one."

Of course, the recollection of former Storm forward and now Bronco Adam Blair is a decidedly different one. Along with Michael Crocker, Jeremy Smith and Jeff Lima in particular, the Storm had a ruthless forward pack that competed hard on every single play.

They hit Ashton Sims so hard with a minute to go and the game apparently lost that the ball was jolted free and Blair said the emotion of that win carried them through to the grand final.

"Winning games on the bell, they're the special moments," Blair told NRL.com. "We had some special moments in there where they lost the ball and we ended up scoring in the corner and winning the game.

"Those games are the games that turn the end of the season around. We ended up getting smoked in the final but in saying that it's hard enough getting into the final and being a part of it."

Seven years on and almost a decade since their last premiership, Thaiday not only recognises the opportunity afforded to the top-four bound Broncos but will ensure the younger members of the squad seize it also.

"As an older player I've got more of an appreciation of semi-finals and trying to push now to make a grand final again because who knows, it might not be for another long period of time before you get into this position again," Thaiday said.

"I'll make sure I do everything I can as a player and hopefully encourage and inspire some of these other guys in the team to really lift and get through these games as well."

Thaiday: 2008 was our year

Blair was dirty as **** in that game. Even got 10 in the bin.

That's enough thinking about that game for the next 5 years though. **** that game.

i fucking hate thinking about that fucking game. ****.

Now I'm cranky.

I just realised that this was the last Broncos finals game I attended. I was going to go in 2009 to watch the Dragons but didn't want my poor record against St George ruin the Broncos chances.

Such a heart-breaking clash, but if there was any silver-lining, at least the Broncos didn't let all the drama engulf them. That was one of the most turbulent weeks I've ever endured as a fan. It seemed like every day, some new scandal was coming out and I was just waiting for something big to drop. However, the boys put it behind them and from memory had the better of Melbourne through out the majority of the contest.

My enduring memory was just the bad vibes I had about it. I call it the Red Wedding effect, where it seems like everything is great but something tragic is just lurking around the corner. That lingering doubt remained with me until Slater spilled the ball. At that second, my eye was directly at the clock. I was counting down and things were getting super slow.

The rest they say is history.

I don't remember being that physically upset after a game before. I wasn't ranting or raving, I just felt like I'd been punched in the guts and smacked right in the middle of the nose. That one hurt...

and I think it played into how pissed off I was with the World Cup Final. Thought for sure the season would end on a nice high note and I'd have a story I could tell the grand kids. Instead I watch Ashley Klein decide he's the star of the show and make some of the most baffling calls I've ever seen. Never forgave him for that and blame him for a number of changes for the game.

Regardless, like 2002, I don't buy into 2008 being the Broncos year. They did well all things considered but had too many weaknesses in key positions and Locky wasn't quite 100% that year. 2005 and 2011 on the other hand...

yeah, got news for Sam - much as I hate to say it, nobody was beating Manly in that 08' grand final

they were spectacular

That walk back to Roma felt like the longest walk I've ever done.

I just wanted to smash something.

Fucking Slater leading with the feet on what would have been the match-winning try...

I was there too. Doing that same walk. **** I wanted to smash any cocky Storm supporter who just looked at me sideways.

I think Manly would have still smashed us.

2011, on the other hand, was our year until Bruce Lee.

I didn't watch it until years later, but they were awesome in the prelim as well.

NZ were one of the form teams in the competition and Cleary had them ready to play before Manly trounced them in the prelim 32-6. The Warriors really didn't do a lot wrong, but Manly just found ways to repel them and turn defence into attack. The score could have easily been 42-0 and it would have been a fair reflection of Manly's defence but a late consolation try to Kirk (if ever there was a 2008 name, there you have it) and some shoddy goal-kicking somewhat flattered the Warriors in Wiki's last ever NRL game.

It's all elementary now that it's happened and all the Storm salary cap came out, but it's disappointing we didn't get to see Manly take on Melbourne with Smith. As good as Manly were, I don't think I've seen a worse performance from Melbourne and they seemed really put off by Aitken's service in the middle. With Smith there, I reckon they do a better job of pressuring Manly early and don't throw in the towel as early as they did.

Would have made for an amazing final.

After that game i just sat in my chair starring at the TV, barely even blinking. my brother keeping his distance. I was in a trance like state for about an hour ... i couldn't even finish my beer.

Now i'm sad

I suggest some form of punishment for Super Freak for bringing up that game :witchhunt:

I didn't even see it live, I sat in my seat as everyone around me stood up and I heard the roar from the crowd. Makes it harder to take to know they were cheating.

I worked so hard to get that game out of my conscious, and not it all came back with a vengeance. I feel almost as dejected as I felt on the night, and I don't think I've ever sat in train that full and quiet...

Freak, there's a special place in hell for you, and Drew won't be there!

I was watching it at home with the old man. As soon as the ball came out he was in despair saying 'they'll score here'. I thought for sure we had them covered as it was so close to our line that we were still in decent defensive formation so I said "No they won't" .....

I think the image of Locky screaming in the in-goal is the worst thing I've ever seen

Also thus began Inglis's career of fucking us over at every possible opportunity

That Sims knock on happened right in front of me.
