Australia have been dealt a major blow 50 days out from the Magellan Ashes with fast bowler James Pattinson ruled out of the Test series against England.
Pattinson will take an indefinite break from cricket after re-aggravating a lower back stress fracture that ruled him out of Australia’s recent tour to Bangladesh.
"Obviously I am extremely disappointed with this setback after just getting back into a good run of playing cricket," Pattinson said.
"I'm especially disappointed to miss out on the possibility to play in a home Ashes series.
"Over the next few weeks I will discuss all available options available to me with medical staff, to work out the best plan to prevent this from happening again."
Pattinson hasn't played since July 1 when he represented Nottinghamshire in the final of England's one-day tournament against Surrey at Lord's.
The Victorian was a member of Australia's Champions Trophy campaign but was not selected as Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins handled the fast-bowling duties.
Pattinson's extended stint on the sidelines also ends the prospect of Australia playing the renowned 'Big Four', with Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins also in that quartet.
"Soon after returning from the UK, following the Champions Trophy and his county cricket contract, James presented with back pain," said Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager Alex Kountouris.
"We made the decision to withdraw him from the Tour of Bangladesh and monitor his pain.
"He returned to bowling after a period of rest and unfortunately he is still experiencing pain with bowling.
"During this time we have been monitoring him, including regular scans, and recent imaging has confirmed that James has begun to re-aggravate his previous lower back stress fracture.
"As such, he has discontinued bowling as part of his recovery which unfortunately means that he will be unavailable for the beginning of the Sheffield Shield and subsequently the Ashes campaign.
"Whilst this is very disappointing that James has reaggravated this old injury, we are confident that he can recover from this and return to playing.
"However, James’ current injury is complex because his history of old stress fractures from his teenage years means there is one part of his spine that absorbs more force than it would normally do.
"This is the area the of current re-aggravation but we are hopeful that we can put strategies in place to help manage this when James returns to playing."
Pattinson requested not to be considered for Australia's Border-Gavaskar series in India earlier this year, not wanting to rush back into action too early and sustain further injury.
The 27-year-old instead starred for Victoria in the back half of the JLT Sheffield Shield and then for Nottinghamshire in county cricket, claiming 32 wickets in just five matches during his time at Trent Bridge.
Australia's pace stocks have taken some damage in recent times.
Before Pattinson was ruled out, Hazlewood suffered a side injury in the first Test in Bangladesh while his NSW teammate Starc was not considered for the two-Test tour as he recovered from an injured foot.
Starc is set to make his return on Friday in the JLT One-Day Cup clash against South Australia in Sydney. Hazlewood has only just started bowling having been training in the gym and is eyeing a comeback in the first Shield round on October 27 against the Redbacks.

He probably wouldn't be in our best 11 regardless, but it sucks for Patto, I honestly thought he had the highest potential of all the quicks we had coming through, but all these stress fractures and assorted injuries have just ruined his career, I'd be surprised if he played for Aus again.

What XI are you guys predicting for the first test at the Gabba? @1910 @Sproj

This is the team I'm hoping for -

1. Renshaw
2. Warner (vc)
3. Khawaja
4. Smith (c)
5. Handscomb
6. Cartwright
7. Whiteman
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

You could make an argument for Stoinis or Maxwell at 6, but I like the added batting that Cartwright brings (He's been AWFUL in the ODI's, but he still has a FC average of 50 with the bat, and is a handy bowler on Aus pitches)

Could also make the argument for Nevill over Whiteman for the added safety, but Nevill is 31, I think this is the perfect time to throw Whiteman in the deep end.

I can't argue with that side at all. I reckon Pierson could become the keeper but he is nowhere near it yet. I am a massive fan of Cartwright and hope they give him an extended go.

If we are going to pick a new keeper how does Carey not get rewarded with the spot?

59 Dismissals last year- a SS all time record. Athletic keeper that is terrific mover.

Whiteman hasn't played since January because of his finger and it is still not right. He's a chance to not play this summer if it gets operated on again. It's the same injury that saw Paine never get back.

First I've even heard of Carey, just looked him up. I assume he would be overlooked because he averages 25 with the bat. As much as I'm in the same boat that I think a specialist keeper with great ability behind the stumps is of the utmost importance, you've gotta average 35+ in FC as a keeper in this day and age, imo.

Patto was in great form, was averaging something ridiculous with the ball in FC over the past year or two, like sub-20 or something.

I think Whiteman is injured, Nevill or Carey will be picked IMO. Maxxie deserves first shot in 6 seeing as how he's averaged close to 40 since returning to the test side, and has never played at home. I'd pick Cartwright at 3, where he's played his best cricket in FC, over Khawaja, who literally can not bat on a deck where the ball is moving or spinning.

Pattinson is so injury-prone. Guy has collected a lot of cash sitting on the sidelines. Made his Test debut in 2011 but has only played 17 Tests.

What's the bowling stocks past our first choices look like currently?

So Starc and Hazlewood are walk up starts.

Cummins should be there.

Coulter-Nile next in line.

No idea after that lol

Behrendorff. Swings it both ways and is coming off an incredible season, if he had a good couple of games to start the season and a spot was open he'd go close. 37 wickets at 17 last year.

Sayers- late outswing against right handers if England has a lot. 62 wickets last season third most in SS history- In the final first innings 6 of his 7 wickets had played International cricket.

Australia's pace bowling stocks even without Patto are very, very full, a real strength.

Cummins
Hazlewood
Starc

Bird
Sayers
Coulter-Nile
Behrendorff
Siddle

Young uns

Steketee
J Richardson
Sandhu

It's way too early to be picking an XI. Like last year, so much will depend on early runs in the first 3 rounds of Sheffield Shield. I think the top 5 picks itself: Warner, Renshaw, Khawaja, Smith & Handscombe. The battle will be for that no. 6 slot. I don't see the need for an allrounder @ 6, but Australia seem to persist with that anyway. I guess it's Maxwell's spot to lose.

I reckon Nevill is the front runner for the keepers spot, but if any of Carey, Paine (although I doubt he'll get selected ahead of Wade for Tasmania) or even Piersen makes runs they could be outside chances. I think Carey is the only one who can seriously push for a spot ahead of Nevill and Wade.

If there aren't any injuries the bowling line up with be Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Lyon.

Peter Nevill with 6 catches & 2 stumping a today, not doing his chances of a recall any harm.

Beats the Australian record of 6- Seccombe, Gilchrist, Campbell and Haddin.

Equal world record with three others for list A.

The leg side stumping to end the innings was great footwork and movement.

He (or anyone really)should be in instead of Wade, he has really blown this extended run he has been given.
