I went into this season determined to have a fresh approach in attitude towards this season. I wanted to forget any basis's I had towards any player and give them a chance to prove themselves after our longest off season in years. Firstly my initial thoughts were less then optimistic, I liked Henjak and thought that sacking him before the season had begun would bring too much instability and without an additional quality player to replace Falou, such as Inglis I feared our season was doomed to mediocrity.
After 8 rounds I am pleased to say I have been proved incorrect. My judgment of Henjak was, lets just say, uninformed. No doubt he has had an impact in the development in certain players, but also believe it was because of him that Inglis decided against coming here and possibly other players we were not made aware of. I still believe we lack one more quality attacking back to truly become a premiership force, but time will tell.
From what I have seen over the past 8 rounds has been very encouraging, the Broncos are playing like a team! My biggest grips over the past number of seasons has been our defence, consistently one of the worse performers in missed tackles and offloads against, not this year. Griffen is building a team here and although I can't see a premiership just yet, stranger things have happened.
I'm really liking Griffen, at the press conference he said that he was disappointed and that no loss was "respectable", how refreshing. It shows that he is building a team that doesn't not accept second best, no excuses. Brilliant.
Now to my opinion on players.
On players that have really impressed me.
1. Reed - Of course, more workman than flashy centre, just seems to get the job done.
2. Parker - Just keeps going
3. Yow Yeh - Has really stepped up this year, improving all the time
4. Lockyer - Playing better then I have seen him play in years.
5. Hammant - Burning up the metres liking his go forward.
6. Hodges - Again, he's getting back to his best, I thought it would take longer.
Players I'm happy with, doing their job without standing out.
1. Beale - Has done a good job at the back, but my preference is still Hoffman
2. Dodds - I think there is a lot of improvement in him, but he looks the goods, needs more game time.
3. Glenn - IMO, playing out of position, but not letting us down
4. Wallace - Getting back to form, but still not worrying the defence as much as I'd like, in saying that, last nights game was his best in years. Defence is excellent.
Players IMO that are just not cutting it, or not improving or even a liability.
1. McCullough - Would he be the starting Hooker in any other club? His service is slow and the way he holds the ball at dummy-half always gives the defenders a chance at spoiling, happening far too often, 5 at my count, each one at critical times. (Hunt has also been guilty at that).
2. Hunt - Please I got to know what people are seeing in him? He has many supporters in this forum and all claim that he should get Lockyers spot next year. What am I missing? I look at the young half backs at other clubs and although not in the top 4's league they all offer something. Hunt has shown nothing and last night has not been the first time he's been given an opportunity at half back but he looked nothing short of a passenger. He should be sent back to the QLD Cup for at least a year to work on his craft, he is not first grade standard at this stage.
3. Kenny - For all his hard work he hasn't had the impact I thought he would.
Of the young group coming through Norman, Gagai, Lui, Copley and Hala all look promising. Norman will be a star player within the next couple of years, of that I have no doubt. I would like to see Baptiste given a chance in first grade.
Disappointed in Tronc, McGuire and Anderson.
Well that's my rant, not expecting anyone to read it, just wanted to get it off my chest.
