The game has gone soft ladies and gentlemen.

Was watching some footage reels over the weekend and skimming through a couple of replays -

I know it is stating on the obvious but the game has gone soft... any time something tough happens its a penalty. I wish the refs would let the boys play sometimes.

Dirty play is a no go but let em play ref.

/rant

The penalties are so frustrating and I find myself yelling at the TV.

Frankly I don't mind if they penalise rough play. It's the nitpicking penalties in the ruck coming out of danger that frustrate me. Totally takes away the ability for teams to build pressure. Referees are LOOKING for penalties.

agreed. why does the game need to be brutal for it to be enjoyable? The refs need to let the game flow.

100% - the game will always be tough, the nature of the sport, but certain changes in the way the game is played, things like the wrestle, etc, mean that the refs need to be more involved to ensure that the game is a product that people want to want, I don't want to watch 80 mins of wrestling (not my cup of tea, leave it to draggz), so I'm happy for the refs to keep the game moving, but that's it, keep the game:
a) moving and exciting; and
b) let the game flow.

No you are right, 80minutes of Wrestling in what is ment to be a high flowing game is not my cup of tea either. Its boring.

Of course I was referring to your love of (or my perception that you love) WWF, or TNA, professional wrestling, not suggesting you, or anyone really enjoys the painful and boring NRL game that comes from wrestling

there were 4 or 5 penalties in our game on friday night that were very, very soft.

I couldn't believe the "dangerous tackle" penalty midway through the first half against us when the player wasn't even close to being tackled above the horizontal. even the penalty to us for taking lockyer out was soft.

TNA mate :P

the main rule that needs to be scrapped is the 'any contact with the head and its a high tackle' rule. thats ridiculous. we have guys falling, moving their heads, and catching a slight brush with someones upper arm, and earning a penalty. how many 'high shots' have we seen called where the defenders arm has made first contact with the ball carriers arm, slid up, hit the ball, then ended up just on the base of the ball carriers neck, only to be penalised? its ridiculous.

That is what I'm talking about... I don't understand why it has become like this.

it also leads to 'Jarryd Hayne Syndrome' - players feeling ANYTHING touch their face in a tackle, and just staying down pretending to be hurt from it in order to gain a penalty. and 9 times out of 10 they get one.

its the worst rule to come in to rugby league in decades.

Also more recently known as 'Jamie Soward Syndrome'. It's such a farked rule. Just helping divers get their way.
