...Is of course the the defensive pattern employed by NSW. After Game 1 I prattled on about how impressive and intelligent their defense was.
It was very clever again tonight.
We were all aware that NSW, by the team they selected, would play a fast faced and pressing game in defense. We saw it especially with the pressure on our kickers, the scrambling defense and the fact that Cam Smith ran frequently from dummy half.
To me though, one of the key players was the much maligned Soward. He may have made 3 tackles, but his work as an 'up and inner' worked perfectly to cut off one of the equally maligned JT's pet plays.
By coming out of the line and blocking JT's path to his wide men, Soward basically took JT out of the game.
Personally, in his playing days ol' RBY would have dinked a little grubber in behind the line for a winger who would have been instructed to plant himself on the touchline. That would have caused Soward and his coach to consider the ploy.
Anyway, watch the game again and admire the thought that went into Soward's role ( especially the first half ) and the way he was able to execute it.
Very smart and effective and it helps to explain why JT has been very quiet to date.
As one of the commentators said when describing the Qld attack, "They seem to be making it up as they go along."
